Hillcats Fail to Complete Sweep in Wilmington
May 4, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Wilmington, DE- Todd Cunningham was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs, but it wasn't enough to allow the Hillcats to complete the sweep over the division leaders, as they fell 7-3 to Wilmington Wednesday night.
The Hillcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Todd Cunningham doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning. He later scored as Adam Milligan reached on an error three batters later.
The Blue Rocks erased the 1-0 deficit in the second inning. Alex McClure tripled home Nick Francis. Wilmington then took the lead in the third inning as all nine batters came to the plate scoring four runs off of left-hander Matt Crim (1-2).
Crim found himself in more trouble in the fourth inning. The first five batters he faced all reached base in the inning on a double, three singles, and an intentional walk. Only one run scored after those five batters as Adam Milligan threw out Deivy Batista at home plate trying to score from second on Whit Merrifield's single to right. With the bases loaded and one out, Crim induced a shallow fly out to left, and then exited the game. Right-hander Dan Jurik came in to face righty Alex McClure. McClure reached on an error scoring another run, and then Jose Bonilla flew out to center field to end the inning. Wilmington ended the fourth with a comfortable 7-1 lead.
The Hillcats would score twice more through the remainder of the game. Cunningham singled home Matt Weaver in the fifth and again in the seventh making it 7-3. That was all the Hillcats could manage eventually falling by that same score.
Jake Odorizzi (2-0) pitched six innings, striking out eight while allowing just two runs on his way to the win. Crim suffered the loss after 2.2 innings of relief, allowing seven runs, five earned on 11 hits.
The Hillcats failed to complete the sweep but took the series 2-1 over the Blue Rocks, the first time Lynchburg won a three-game series this season.
Lynchburg will stay on the road, traveling down to Winston-Salem for a four game series beginning Thursday night. Game one of the series will begin at 7:00 pm as RHP Arodys Vizcaino (1-2, 2.93) takes the mound for the Hillcats against Winston-Salem's RHP Terry Doyle (0-3, 4.50).
Coverage will begin at 6:40 with the Hillcats On-Deck Show powered by Honda/Suzuki of Lynchburg on 105.5 KD Country and online at lynchburg-hillcats.com.
