Winston-Salem Dash News Release

FREDERICK, MD (MAY 4, 2011) - Miguel Abreu hit a wind-aided grand slam and L.J. Hoes went 5 for 5 to help lead the Frederick Keys to a 9-3 win over the Dash on Wednesday afternoon at Harry Grove Stadium. The game was marred by a scary injury to Frederick centerfielder Trent Mummey, who was hospitalized after diving headfirst into an outfield wall.

The injury occurred in the second inning when the Dash (9-17) had two men on base and Luis Sierra at the plate. Sierra sent a long fly ball to left-centerfield and Mummey attempted a diving catch. He came up short on the catch and dove straight into the wall. Two runs scored on the play to give the Dash a 2-0 lead.

Mummey laid motionless on the field as the training staffs for both teams raced out to assist the centerfielder. The game was delayed by 25 minutes as an ambulance arrived and Mummey was transported to Frederick Memorial Hospital. The latest update from the Keys stated that Mummey was alert and moving his extremities and was moved to the hospital for precautionary reasons.

When the game resumed, things soon went south for Winston-Salem. Three of the first four batters of the third inning reached against starter Joe Serafin. Abreu then swatted the first pitch he saw out to left field. A strong wind helped push the ball just over the fence for a grand slam to give the Keys (12-13) a 4-2 lead. It was Abreu's first hit in 11 Carolina League at bats this season. Frederick added one more run later in the inning on Luis Bernardo's RBI single.

The Keys continued their offensive assault in the fourth against Addison Reed. The first four batters all reached base on an error, two singles, and a double. All four men eventually came around to score to extend Frederick's lead to seven runs.

Winston-Salem scratched a run across in the eighth inning on an RBI double by Jake Oester, but could not get any closer as the Keys won the game and the series, sending the Dash to their 14th loss in 17 games.

Frederick starter Bobby Bundy (3-2) earned the win, allowing two runs on four hits in 5.2 innings. Serafin (0-2) took the loss after giving up five runs in three innings.

While Abreu provided the biggest hit of the game for the Keys, Hoes also had a day to remember with a career-high five base hits. He had four singles, a double, one RBI, and two runs scored. His batting average jumped from .222 at the start of the day to .263.

Oester was the offensive star for Winston-Salem, going 3 for 4 with a double, one RBI, and one run scored to boost his batting average to .433 and extend his hit streak to ten games.

The game was delayed by 35 minutes at the start as the grounds crew prepared the field following a long night of steady rain.

The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark on Thursday night to start a six-game home stand against the Lynchburg Hillcats and Potomac Nationals. Thursday's game against the Hillcats begins at 7 p.m. and features a starting pitching matchup of RHP Terry Doyle (0-3, 4.50) and RHP Arodys Vizcaino (1-2, 3.93). The audio broadcast of the game starts at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .
