Pelicans Game Notes
April 19, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT...: The Pelicans returned home from their dominant weekend sweep of the Lynchburg Hillcats and survived a nail-biter in their first game against the Winston-Salem Dash, 2-1. In an exhilirating finish, left fielder Travis Adair threw out potential tying run Andy Wilkins at the plate, thanks in part to a phenomenal block of home by Vinny DiFazio for the game's final out. The Birds broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh on a double by DiFazio and an RBI single by Adair. Starter Joe Wieland pitched six strong innings of one-run ball, scattering seven hits. The right-hander struck out seven, including a stretch of five in a row, and walked just one. Andrew Doyle pitched a perfect seventh and eighth to pick up his first win while Trevor Hurley recorded his first save. Adair, a Woodruff, SC native, notched two hits last night, as did shortstop Leury Garcia and second baseman Andres James.
HIGH MARKS: With Travis Adair moving into the top ten, the Pelicans boast three of the eight highest batting averages in the Carolina League. Third baseman Mike Olt, who took home the first Carolina League Player of the Week award on Monday, is third at .405. Center fielder Ryan Strausborger is off to a torrid start as well, as his .349 mark ranks fourth. Adair's two-hit game last night moved him into eighth at .343.
OPENING RIGHT: Last night's thrilling victory means the Pelicans have won the first game of each of their first four series. Ryan Kelly got the save in each of the first three series openers and he moves to the rotation tonight to try and give the Birds their third series win.
