Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
The Hillcats gave up 10 runs on 15 hits to the Salem Red Sox while committing four errors en route to a 10-5 loss, their ninth straight.
The Hillcats drew first blood for the first time this season, scoring in the bottom of the first. Andrelton Simmons singled to lead off the inning. He seemed to be caught off of first as the throw came from the pitcher Chris Hernandez. However, the relay to second from the first baseman Reynaldo Rodriguez got away from the shortstop, and rolled into left field, allowing Simmons to reach third. Todd Cunningham then brought him home with a single.
The lead didn't last too long, as Salem's Kolbrin Vitek followed back-to-back walks with a double, bringing both runners home in the top of the third. The Sox extended their lead to 3-1 when Shannon Wilkerson led off the fourth with a home run.
The game started to unravel in the fifth inning. Two errors from Simmons and one from starter Dimasther Delgado allowed three runs, two unearned, to come in to score, and chased Delgado from the game. Reliever David Hale got out of the fifth, and cruised through the sixth, but ran into trouble in the seventh, giving up three hits and two runs to allow the Red Sox to extend their lead to 8-1.
The Hillcats were down, but not out, and cut into the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Braeden Schlehuber doubled, and Simmons followed with a walk, his third of the game. Phil Gosselin brought both home with a triple, and then scored on Todd Cunningham's groundout to cut the lead to 8-4.
Jeremy Hazelbaker continued to plague the Hillcats, hitting a one out double in the eighth, and scoring as Ronald Bermudez doubled right after him. Hazelbaker went 4-4 on the night. Bermudez would score as well in the inning, making the score 10-4.
Simmons, who reached base five times in the game, singled to lead off the ninth. Adam Milligan doubled him home, extending his hitting streak to eight games. That was all the Hillcats could muster in the ninth, as they fell 10-5.
Hernandez picked up the win to improve to 2-0, while Delgado dropped to 0-2. Salem won their fourth in a row to improve to 8-2, while Lynchburg dropped their ninth straight and fell to 1-9, their worst 10-game start since branding themselves as the Hillcats in 1995.
The Hillcats and Red Sox will wrap up the series by traveling to Salem Wednesday night. Arodys Vizcaino makes his third start for the Hillcats, and Salem will send lefty Drake Britton to the mound. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
The Hillcats On-Deck Show presented by Honda/Suzuki of Lynchburg will go on the air at 6:40. Tune in to 105.5 KD Country or go to lynchburg-hillcats.comto listen live to all the action.
