Salem RidgeYaks News Release

Lynchburg, VA - Chris Hernandez induced 11 more ground-outs in five strong innings, while the Salem sticks banged out 15 hits-including nine extra-base knocks-in a 10-5 victory over Lynchburg on Tuesday night at City Stadium. Jeremy Hazelbaker went 4-4 to lead the Salem offense, which also received three hits apiece from Kolbrin Vitek and Shannon Wilkerson. In five games this season against the Hillcats, the Red Sox are 5-0 and have outscored the Cats 38-13.

The Hillcats scored first for the first time in ten games this season, yet still were handed their ninth straight loss as starter Dimaster Delgado got rocked in the middle innings. Salem plated two in the third, one in the fourth, and three more in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead. Salem added two more in the seventh and two more in the eighth off the Hillcat bullpen, giving the Sox 40 runs on 50 hits in the last four games, all victories.

In his second start, Hernandez once again became a ground-ball machine and did not allow an earned run in five super frames. The Floridian lefthander improved to 2-0 and now has recorded 23 ground-outs in his ten innings on the season. Will Latimer (three runs) and Cesar Cabral (one run) each were scratched in garbage time, but the Sox held a comfortable lead throughout the ballgame.

Hazelbaker reached base five times at the top of the lineup, connecting for two singles, two doubles, and drawing a walk. Playing center-field for the first time this season, Hazelbaker scored three runs for the second straight game and increased his average to .379.

Vitek added three extra-base hits, two doubles and a triple, to perpetuate his offensive resurgence. In addition, Wilkerson, who had gone 2-8 in limited playing time thus far in 2011, went 3-5 with two RBI and his first Carolina League homer, a solo shot in the fourth.

Ronald Bermudez and Reynaldo Rodriguez also contributed two hits and two RBI apiece. Overall, Salem's 1-6 hitters combined to go 14-27, with nine extra-base hits and eight RBI.

The victory gave Salem a 4-1 record on their five-game trip and improved the Sox to 8-2 on the season. The Red Sox return to LewisGale Field at Salem Memorial Ballpark on Wednesday to begin a five game homestand. Salem will complete the three-game, two-city series with the Hillcats on Wednesday at 7:05 before welcoming Potomac to town on Thursday for a four game set.
