Winston-Salem Dash News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC (APRIL 19, 2011) - The Pelicans scored five unearned runs in the eighth inning to erase a two-run deficit and rallied to a 7-4 win over the Dash on Tuesday night at BB&T Coastal Field. Winston-Salem led 4-2 entering the eighth, but committed three errors en route to losing consecutive games for the first time this season
Myrtle Beach (8-3) struck for the game's first run in the third inning against Dash starter Terry Doyle. With one out, Santiago Chirino and Travis Adair singled. Ryan Strausborger brought Chirino home on a groundout to third to make it 1-0 Pelicans.
Winston-Salem (6-5) scored three in the fourth inning to claim its first lead. Daniel Wagner doubled and moved to third on Jose Martinez's single. Wagner came home to score on a passed ball with Jared Mitchell batting to even the game. Mitchell then stroked a double to right to score Martinez and push the Dash ahead by one. Two batters later, Andy Wilkins hit an RBI single to make it 3-1 Winston.
The Pelicans scored a run in the bottom of the fourth on a Jared Prince base hit to get to within a run, but the Dash got that back in the sixth inning when Kyle Shelton brought home Ian Gac with a base hit.
Doyle ran into trouble in the sixth, loading the bases with nobody out. Ryan Kussmaul entered the game and struck two men out before getting Chirino to ground out, leaving the bases loaded.
The Dash would not be so lucky in the eighth inning. Tyson Corley came in to pitch for Winston with a two-run lead. He gave up a leadoff single to Mike Olt and then Jared Hoying bounced a ball to second base. Shelton threw to the shortstop Wagner, but the ball fell out of Wagner's glove for an error. Prince followed with a walk and the bases were loaded again with no outs.
Zach Zaneski then hit a chopper to Wagner, who booted the ball, allowing Olt to score from third to re-load the bases. Chirino tied the game with a 4-6 groundout that brought home Hoying and put men on the corners. Travis Adair followed with a drag bunt that was knocked down to the right of the mound by Corley (0-1). In an attempt to throw home, Corley instead tossed the ball off the facing of the Pelicans dugout for another error, the third of the inning. Prince scored easily to make it 5-4 Myrtle, Chirino went to third base and Adair was safe at first.
Strausborger and Leury Garcia brought home insurance runs to up the Pelicans' lead to three and finish off the long inning. The eighth featured five unearned runs, three hits, a walk, and a season-high three errors.
Tyler Tufts mowed down the Dash in order in the ninth inning to pick up his third save in as many chances. Corley was charged with the loss while Johan Yan (1-0) collected the win with 1.2 scoreless innings.
Winston-Salem will look to salvage the series on Wednesday night when RHP Andre Rienzo (0-0, 2.00) opposes LHP Robbie Erlin (1-0, 2.60). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and the audio broadcast can be heard at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.
The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on Thursday night to start an eight-game home stand against the Wilmington Blue Rocks and Frederick Keys. Fans may purchase tickets for the first "Thirsty Thursday" of the season and for every other game in 2011 by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or by visiting www.wsdash.com.
