TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Pelicans enter the series finale vying of a four game series sweep of the Wilmington Blue Rocks. The Pelicans have dominated the series thus far, outscoring the Blue Rocks 12-1. The Blue Rocks have not scored a run since the eighth inning of game one. With their doubleheader sweep last night, the Pelicans are now one win away from tying the franchise record of 88 set back in 2000. Scott Diamond recorded his league best 12th win of the season last night. In addition, Eric Campbell moved within three home runs of tying the career franchise record of 35 achieved by Isaiah "KK" Ka'aihue from 2006-07. The Pelicans are 14-5 against the Blue Rocks this season.
TODAY'S PITCHERS: In a righty vs. lefty matchup, the Pelicans send Ryne Reynoso to the hill in search of his first win since July 28th, while the Blue Rocks will go with Everett Teaford.
Reynoso: Ranks second in the Carolina League in ERA (3.15) behind recently named Carolina League Pitcher of the Year Jake Arietta (2.87) of the Frederick Keys. Went on the Disabled List on August 11th and returned on August 19th after dealing with tonsillitis. Since his return, he has made one spot relief appearance and one short start. In a combined 4.2 innings, he has allowed only four hits and no runs. All told, Reynoso has tossed a career high 123.0 innings, in which he has allowed 110 hits and 43 earned runs. He leads the Pelicans pitching staff in innings pitched, starts (24) and strikeouts (110). Since the all-star break, Reynoso sports a 4-1 record with a 2.93 ERA.
The Sun Valley, Idaho native was signed by the Braves on November 9, 2006. He played his college baseball at Boston College. In his first professional season, he was the closer for the Rome Braves. He secured a team-best nine saves in 40 total appearances.
Teaford: Ranks ninth in the Carolina League in ERA (3.83). Coming off a solid last start (8/22 vs. KIN), where he tossed six innings and allowed only four hits and one earned run. Typically pitches much better at home (4-3, 2.82) than he does away from Frawley Stadium (4-3, 5.08). Teaford is second on the Rocks staff in innings pitched behind last night's game one starter Matt Kniginyzky. His 110 strikeouts is also second on the staff behind Kniginyzky. In two starts against Myrtle Beach, he is 0-0 with a solid 3.12 ERA. His last start against MB was on May 9th, when he went 4.1 innings, giving up six hits and three runs.
The Alpharetta, GA native was selected in the 12th round of the 2006 draft by the Royals. He played collegiately at Georgia Southern University. Last season, he was third on the Burlington Bees staff in wins and strikeouts.
THE MAGIC IS IN THE NUMBER PART TWO: Already post-season assured, the Pelicans currently boast a magic number of three to claim the second half title as well.
COUNTDOWN TO ATTENDANCE RECORD: With five home contests remaining in 2008, the Pelicans are pulling closer to the overall 10-year franchise attendance record of 234,020 (2000). The Pelicans are currently 9,441 fans shy of eclipsing the mark.
CAN'T TOUCH THIS: Pelicans pitching has been a major factor in this series. Kyle Cofield set the tone in game one with a six inning one-hit shutout of the Blue Rocks. In game two, Scott Diamond tossed a seven-inning complete game shutout. Then, in game three, Cole Rohrbough hurled a seven-inning complete game shutout as well. He only surrendered two hits. Pelicans starters have not allowed a run in 20 straight innings. The last time a starter allowed a run was on August 23rd against Winston-Salem (seventh inning).
