Kinston Wins Opener, Rain Takes the Nightcap

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - On a wet and windy night at Ernie Shore Field, the Kinston Indians claimed a 7-4 win over Winston-Salem in game one of a doubleheader while rain finished the nightcap. The Indians now trail the Warthogs by 1.5 games in the chase for the second half playoff berth in the southern division.

In the opener, Kinston jumped in front early as Carlos Santana blasted a solo home run in the first inning off Anthony Carter to put the Indians in front 1-0. They added to their lead in the second inning when Johnny Drennen lined a two-run double down the right field line to give Kinston a 3-0 lead.

Winston-Salem tied the game in the second inning when Salvador Sanchez led off with a walk, stole second and third, then scored on a Ronnie Gaines double. Later in the inning, C.J. Retherford hammered a two-run single to right field to knot the score at three.

Two defensive mistakes permitted the Warthogs grab a brief lead in the fourth. An error allowed Sergio Miranda to reach second base with two outs. Retherford hit a ground ball to third base that was bobbled by Jared Goedart. His throw to first was late and Miranda came around from second to score the go-ahead run.

The Indians would bounce back with a pair of runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to grab a 7-4 advantage. Josh Tomlin worked the final two scoreless innings to preserve the win and collect his second save of the season. Santana led the way at the plate going 3-for-3 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored.

Kinston starting pitcher Shawn Nottingham (3-4) went five innings and allowed four runs on seven hits, but collected the win. Anthony Carter (6-5) took the loss for Winston-Salem after surrendering five runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings pitched.

The nightcap was suspended with no score in the top of the third inning and will be resumed at 6 p.m. on Thursday night with a nine-inning nightcap to follow. In game two, Winston-Salem will send RHP Matt Long (7-11, 4.61), while Kinston is expected to start RHP Hector Rondon (11-6, 3.69).
