Woodbridge, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, posted five consecutive fifth-inning singles Wednesday night to score three runs and, ultimately, drop the Potomac Nationals 3-2 at Pfitzner Stadium. Salem (26-39) got three and a third scoreless innings from its bullpen to keep Potomac (34-31) at bay.
Down 2-0, the Avalanche opened the fifth inning with s ingle to left field from Jhon Florentino. The next batter, Nick Moresi, stroked a single to right field to put runners on second and third. Immediately after, Mark Ori singled to right to score Florentino. On the play, Ori was thrown out by right fielder Michael Burgess for the first out of the inning. Undaunted, the Avs continued their single-fest as Koby Clemens volleyed a base hit that brought Moresi home and knocked starter Luis Atilano out of the game. With Kyle Gunderson in, Tim Torres singled to place Clemens at third. The following batter, Jimmy Van Ostrand, catapulted a ball to left field for a sacrifice fly to score the eventual winning run.
Then, the bullpen took over for starter Chad Wagler who surrendered just two runs in five and two-thirds. The trio of David Qualben, Bryan Hallberg and Jason Dominguez stumped the Nationals for three and a third, allowing just two hits and striking out two. The four Salem pitchers did not walk a Potomac player.
Salem aims for the individual and season series win Thursday at 7:05 PM with lefty Sergio Severino facing right-hander Erik Arnesen.
