Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Myrtle Beach Pelicans (65-36, 20-11) vs. Winston-Salem Warthogs (47-54, 18-14)
Friday, July 25 -- 7:05 PM
BB&T Coastal Field -- Myrtle Beach, SC
Game #102, Home Game #48
TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Pelicans enter their fifth series of the season against the Winston-Salem Warthogs having won the previous four. Thus far this season, the Pelicans have dominated the Hogs, claiming 12-of-14 meetings, including two series sweeps. Most recently, the birds swept a three-game series in Winston-Salem (7/17-7/19). Myrtle Beach also swept Winston-Salem in a four-game set on the Grand Strand (6/2-6/5).
The Pelicans completed a series win over the Frederick Keys on Wednesday, taking three-of-four from Frederick including a dramatic 3-2 walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth inning of the series finale. The Pelicans have the best overall record (65-36), best second half record (20-11) and best road record (35-19) in the Carolina League.
TODAY'S PITCHERS: Rehabbing Braves' reliever Jeff Bennett will make his third start in four games for the Pelicans tonight against right-hander Clevelan Santeliz for Winston-Salem. Bennett will throw one inning before being replaced by fellow right-hander Chris Vines.
Vines: Has won his last two decisions, which doesn't tell the whole story of troubles he has had. In his last start, Vines battled for 5 1/3 innings against Winston-Salem to earn the victory. He allowed three earned runs on eight hits, while striking out four. A start prior, Vines was hit hard by the Frederick Keys, conceding a season-high ten hits and seven earned runs in game one a doubleheader at Harry Grove Stadium. He was spared the loss, although the Pelicans lost the game, 10-8. The righty makes his fourth start of the season against Winston-Salem tonight, and second at home.
A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Vines was selected in the fifth round of the 2003 June Free Agent Draft. In four professional seasons prior to 2008, Vines was 19-15 with a 4.50 ERA.
Santeliz: Was pitching well before running into the Pelicans in his last start at Ernie Shore Field. In that outing, Santeliz was touched up for seven runs - six earned - in just 3 1/3 innings. He allowed six hits including a home run and made matters worse by walking four. Prior to that outing, he had been solid, sporting an ERA of 2.43 through his first seven starts. His ERA ballooned to 3.82 following his appearance against Myrtle Beach.
A native of Valencia, Venezuela, Santeliz made 10 relief appearance for the Barons to start the season, posting an 0-1 record and ERA of 4.41. The 21-year old signed with the White Sox at the age of 17 in 2004 and is spending parts of a second season with Winston-Salem.
JONES CONTINUES ON-BASE STREAK: Pelicans second baseman Travis Jones will put his season-long 27-game on-base streak on the line tonight. Jones' streak is the longest active streak in the Carolina League. The longest streak of its kind in '08 is 32-games (Drennen- KIN).
RECORD BOOK RAMBLINGS: The Pelicans will use historical significance as second half motivation, already post-season assured in the Southern Division. Myrtle Beach already broke the record for first half victories (45) and now eye the record for total wins in season (88 - 2000) and second half wins (46 - 2000). The Pelicans also will have a shot at many other single-season team records including team batting average (.257 - 2006) . The birds are currently batting .264 for the season. They also are on pace to shatter the single-season runs record (637 - 1999), currently leading the Carolina League with 560 runs scored.
SOUPS ON PART TWO: Eric Campbell is approaching the Pelicans' franchise record for career RBIs. Campbell has driven in 49 runs in just 51 games in 2008, and coupled with his 49 in 2007 he has 98 for his career with Myrtle Beach. That total is just two shy of Adam LaRoche, who posted 100 RBIs between 2001-2002. LaRoche was recently named to the Pelicans' 10th Anniversary Team.
