Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

Myrtle Beach , S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans built upon a Willie Cabrera first inning home run and crushed the Winston-Salem Warthogs 8-0 in game one of the series at BB&T Coastal Field. Michael Broadway was superb in a Pelicans season-high relief effort of six innings.

In the bottom of the first inning, Gorkys Hernandez set the table with a walk. Willie Cabrera then wiped the table clean with an opposite field home run to give the Pelicans an early 2-0 advantage.

The Pelicans added two more runs in the third inning. After two outs were recorded, back-to-back walks to Eric Campbell and Ernesto Mejia energized the Birds. Tyler Flowers then singled to right field to load the bases. Travis Jones followed with a two-run single back up the box to give the Pelicans a 4-0 lead.

The Pelicans put the game out of reach in the fourth inning. Brandon Hicks led off by drawing a walk. Phillip Britton followed with a towering home run into Land Shark Landing to stretch the lead to 6-0. Later in the inning, Willie Cabrera scorched a double off the wall in left-center field to score Jon Mark Owings, who was aboard via a walk.

Britton became the sixth Pelican to notch a multi-home run game with his second homer of the night in the eighth inning.

Atlanta Braves reliever Jeff Bennett, who made his third rehab outing for the Birds, pitched a scoreless first inning. Chris Vines came on in the second and worked into the fourth before exiting the game due to pain in his throwing shoulder. Michael Broadway replaced Vines and mystified the Warthogs in the final six innings. He surrendered just two hits to earn his second win of the season. Broadway magically maneuvered his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth to gain momentum for the rest of the evening.

The loss was tagged to Warthogs starter Clevelan Santeliz, who allowed six hits and seven runs in 3.1 innings.

The Pelicans play game two of the series against the Warthogs on Saturday, July 26th at 7:05 p.m. RHP Jeff Lyman (2-4, 4.07) will start for the Pelicans, while RHP Anthony Carter (3-2, 6.12) goes for the Warthogs.
