Hill City Howlers News Release
THE HILLCATS: Lynchburg pounded out a 9-3 rain-shortened victory (game was called in the bottom of the fifth inning) over Wilmington on Wednesday night at City Stadium...The Hillcats won the final two games of the four-game series to earn a series split with the Blue Rocks...The Cats lead is now up to a game and a half game on the Rocks for the final playoff spot in the Northern Division...Wednesday night's game completed a brief four-game homestand for Lynchburg and tonight's game is the first of 10 games in a row on the road to complete a stretch of 18 out of 22 away from City Stadium...
VS. SALEM: The Cats have won five straight games in the season series to gain the advantage eight games to five...They are 4-3 in Salem this year...Last season Salem dominated the season series taking 16 of the 20 games between the two...Including an 8-2 record against the Hillcats in Salem....The Avs have the advantage in the all-time series against the Cats 142-123, and are 81-53 against the Cats at home...Salem has the advantage in the all-time series against Lynchburg 450-448...
IT'S OFFICIAL: Wednesday night's game was just barely official, as it made it through the required four and a half inning before being halted in the bottom of the fifth...It was the first rain shortened game this season for Lynchburg and it was their shortest game of the year, lasting just and hour and 37 minutes...The weather has been relatively kind to the Cats this season, forcing just two postponed games and one suspended contest prior to Wednesday night...
ONE DOWN, SIX TO GO: With the completion of the recent four-game series with Wilmington the Hillcats have now completed their season series with the Blue Rocks...It is the first series against an opponent they have completed this year...They went 9-11 against the Rocks, quite an improvement from the 3-16 record the Cats posted against them last season...
TURNING THE TIDES: The Hillcats lost the first two games of their four-game series with the Blue Rocks by a combined score of 19-8 and did not have a lead in either contest...After that they outscored Wilmington 20-6 in the last two games of the set...The Rocks outscored the Cats 5-0 in the first inning of the first two games and the Cats outscored the Rocks 9-1 in the first frame of the last two...
BIG NIGHT: On Wednesday LF Jared Keel hit two home runs and drove in five runs in the win...It was Keel's first multi-homer game of the season and the fourth of his career...His five RBI performance matched his career-high (had done it twice before this season) and it was the most RBI by a Hillcat this season...
GOING THE DISTANCE: It probably wasn't the way RHP Brad Lincoln envisioned it, but Wednesday night he threw his first complete game victory of his young career and gave Lynchburg their first complete game of the season...The game was called in the bottom of the fifth inning with Lynchburg in front 9-3...Lincoln, who was making his City Stadium debut allowed three runs on six hits in five innings of work to earn his first win as a Hillcat...
DOUBLING AGAIN: A night after the Hillcats clubbed a season-high nine doubles, they knocked six more last night in less than five innings of at-bats...SS Jose De Los Santos, CF Alex Presley and INF Jim Negrych hit back-to-back-to-back doubles in the fourth inning to give Lynchburg a 7-2 lead...On Tuesday night Negrych, UTIL Jamie Romak and 1B Kent Sakamoto hit consecutive doubles in both the first and fifth innings...The 15 doubles hit in the past two games are the most the Cats have hit in back-to-back games all season...
IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE: After loading the bases with nobady out in the first inning Wednesday night, the next two Hillcats struckout and UTIL Miles Durham went down in the count 0-2...But Durham worked the count full and then singled into centerfield to drive in a pair of runs...The very next pitch LF Jared Keel blasted over the wall in left for a three-run home run...Lynchburg scored five runs on two pitches to turn a one-run deficit into a four-run lead...This a night after the Hillcats smacked four straight extra-base hits and plated four runs on just 12 pitches in the first inning to give Lynchburg a 4-0 lead...It also only took five pitches in the fifth for the Cats to tack on three more runs in the fifth when they smacked three straight doubles for the second time on the night and made it a 7-2 ballgame...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Corey Bass was selected in the 47th round of the 2004 draft by the Astros out of Pearl River Community College...He made his professional debut Greenville in the Appalachian League in 2005 and went 3-3 with a 2.93 ERA in 20 games (one start)...The next season he returned to Greenville and became a starter, going 5-2 with a 3.75 ERA in 13 starts...Last season he advanced to Low-A Lexington and 1-3 with a 5.31 ERA and four saves in 31 games (seven starts)...This year with the Avalanche the righthander has gone 3-11 with a 6.53 ERA in 19 starts...This season Bass has gone 0-4 with a 6.75 ERA against Lynchburg in four starts (20.0 ip, 30 h, 20 r, 15 er, 10 k, 5 bb)...
