Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Pelicans return to the Grand Strand for game one of a three-game series against the Frederick Keys. The Pelicans are 4-2 against the Keys this season. They lost the first series meeting (4/11-4/13) two games to one and swept the Keys during their last road swing (5/23-5/25). The Pelicans are 3-1 in home games following a road trip.
The Pelicans are retuning home after going 6-1 on their road trip to Frederick and Winston-Salem. During the trip, the Pelicans exploded offensively, scoring a total of 49 runs (7 per). The Pelicans have been a bit of an oddity this season, posting a 22-10 road record while managing just an 11-10 home record.
TODAY'S STARTING PITCHERS: In a lefty vs. righty matchup, the Pelicans will send Scott Diamond to the hill for his second start of the season against Jake Renshaw, who is in search of his seventh win, which would tie him with Deunte Heath (MYR) and Adrian Alaniz (POT) for the Carolina League lead.
Diamond: On May 20th, Scott Diamond was promoted to Myrtle Beach from Rome (A). In his only start in a Pelicans uniform (5/24 @ FRE), he went six innings, scattering six hits and allowing two runs to cross. He displayed magnificent command, striking out five and walking just one. Prior to his promotion, Diamond made nine starts, earning a 3-1 record with a 3.08 ERA. His most complete outing came on 5/13 against the Augusta GreenJackets, going a season-long seven innings and giving up just one unearned run. He also fanned six batters in the start.
Currently in his first professional season, Diamond was signed as an non-drafted free agent in August of 2007 after he dazzled for the Martinsville Mustangs of the Coastal Plain League (Summer Collegiate).
Renshaw: Tied for second in the Carolina League in wins with six. In 11 appearances (10 starts), he has compiled a total of 56.1 innings (5.1 per). Has had back-to-back rocky outings in which he has surrendered 11 hits and six runs in 12.0 combined innings. Renshaw is making his third start of the season against Myrtle Beach. He holds a 1-0 record against the Pelicans.
Was acquired by White Sox from the Chicago Cubs in a trade for Steve Trachsel in August of 2007. A native of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, he posted a 12-8 record while with the Peoria Chiefs last seasons.
DOWN THE HOME STRETCH: Although the 2008 All-Star Game is slated for June 24th, the first-half of the season actually comes to a close on June 15th. The Pelicans have 17 games remaining in the first have with a seven-and-a-half game lead over the Kinston Indians.
ARMED AND DANGEROUS: The Pelicans currently boast the most home runs of any team in the Carolina League (51). That total includes 11 for shortstop Brandon Hicks, which places him second in the loop. Four Pelicans have hit two home runs in a game thus far this year: Travis Jones belted two on Tuesday; Hicks accomplished the feat on Monday; Ernesto Mejia clubbed two on 4/24 @ Frederick and Tyler Flowers was the first to go deep twice 4/20 @ Kinston. The home run total is made more impressive when factoring in that the birds play in pitcher-friendly BB&T Coastal Field.
BRUCE DAL CANTON UPDATE: Pelicans legendary Pitching Coach Bruce Dal Canton has left the team to attend to medical issues. His timetable for return is uncertain at this point and in the interim, Braves Roving Pitching Instructor Mike Alvarez will assume the duties.
