Winston-Salem Dash News Release
SALEM, VA - The Winston-Salem started their week-long road trip in style by taking two from Salem on Friday night at Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field. The Warthogs shutout the Avalanche 5-0 in the opener and finished off the sweep with a 3-1 win in the nightcap.
The opener was a continuation of a suspended game from Thursday, May 8. In that contest, both teams were scoreless after six innings when the skies opened and rain brought the game to a halt. Warthogs starting pitcher Matt Long and Salem starter Douglas Arguello were engaged in a duel at the stoppage point. Long held the Avalanche to six hits with three strikeouts while Arguello was even more impressive limiting the Warthogs to one hit with seven strikeouts.
The game resumed with Salem reliever David Qualben on the mound. The Warthogs struck immediately as Brandon Allen lined the second pitch from Qualben over the right field wall to put Winston-Salem in front. The Warthogs would add three more runs in the inning as Anderson Gomes and Paulo Orlando collected RBI singles and Greg Paiml brought a run home with a groundout to give the Winston-Salem a 4-0 lead.
Winston-Salem tacked on a run in the eighth inning on a double play ground ball by Gomes. Matt Davis, who took over for Long when the game continued, kept Salem scoreless over the final three frames to preserve the shutout and the win for Long (3-5). Qualben suffered the loss after allowing all five runs in his three innings of relief work.
In game two, Winston-Salem jumped in front early with a pair of runs in the first inning. Javier Colina brought Paulo Orlando home with an RBI single and John Shelby III added an RBI sacrifice fly later in the inning to give the Warthogs a 2-0 lead. C.J. Retherford smacked a solo home run off Casey Hudspeth in the fourth inning to extend Winston-Salem's advantage to 3-0.
Salem plated their lone run against Warthogs starting pitcher Matt Zaleski when Jhon Florentino lifted an RBI sacrifice that scored Mark Ori in the sixth inning.
Zaleski (3-1) allowed one earned run as he scattered six hits with four strikeouts in six innings of work to earn the win. Ryan Rote tossed a pair of scoreless frames and Kanekoa Texeria retired the side in order in the ninth to garner his eighth save of the season. Hudspeth (3-5) settled down after finding trouble in the first and ended up going eight innings, but took the loss for the Avalanche.
The two teams will face off in a doubleheader on Saturday evening with both games scheduled for seven innings. The Warthogs will send RHP Matt Long to the mound in game one and RHP Jacob Rasner in game two. Salem will counter with LHP Douglas Arguello in the lid-lifter and LHP Sergio Severino (0-0, 0.00) in the nightcap. First pitch of game one is set for 5:07 p.m.
