TONIGHT: The Potomac Nationals and Kinston Indians meet in the first game of a three-game series...The P-Nats lost their second straight contest last night 10-9 to Lynchburg...Potomacâs lead over Frederick in the Carolina League Northern Division is now 4.5 games as the Keys were swept in a doubleheader at Kinston.
TONIGHT'S STARTER: The Potomac Nationals send left-hander Ross Detwiler to the mound vying for his fourth win in his last five starts...The 22-year-old worked six innings in his last start, striking out nine batters for the second consecutive outing...Since suffering the loss against Frederick on May 4, the former first-round pick has allowed just seven runs on 16 hits in 21 innings (3.00 ERA) and has lowered his ERA from 5.18 to 4.17 while striking out 24...Detwiler ranks sixth in the Carolina League in strikeouts with 50, one behind Kinston's Hector Rondon...In his lone start against the K-Tribe on May 9, he picked up the win on one of his best professional starts, going a then career-high six innings and limiting the Indians to just one run on four hits with six strikeouts and no walks...It was the first win for the Missouri State product since April 6 and the only start in which he has not walked anyone.
VIEW FROM THE TOP: Today marks the 51st consecutive day the P-Nats have been in or had a share of the division lead since moving to the top spot on April 10...Last season the Nationals spent 31 consecutive days in first from April 5 through May 5...The P-Nats ended the first half in last place, 10 games under .500 and only saw first place for one day, June 21, after May 5.
FOUR MORE OR LESS: The Potomac Nationals completed their fifth four-game series (all but one scheduled) of the season yesterday against the Lynchburg Hillcats...The P-Nats have managed to split each and are 10-10 in four-game sets...Potomac has three more four-game series on its schedule at Lynchburg June 2-5, at home against Wilmington June 6-8, and at Frederick June 12-15...The Nationals were 4-1-6 in four-game series last season including two sweeps.
PITCHING IN: The Potomac Nationals are 4-4 on their current 11-game, ten-day homestand after last night's loss to Lynchburg...Pitching has been key as the Nationals have outscored Salem and Lynchburg 32-12 in the four wins while being outscored 39-18 in the three loses...The bullpen has been battered in the games the P-Nats have dropped, giving up 18 runs, 16 earned, in 20 2/3 innings (6.97 ERA)...Overall, Potomac relievers have allowed 23 runs, 21 earned, in 29 innings (6.52) on the homestand...The âpen had a 2.62 ERA prior to the homestand, which has ballooned to 3.14.
ROGELSTAD ON A ROLL: Infielder Matt Rogelstad has hits in five straight contests...Over that span, the 25-year-old is 9-for-24 (.375) with four doubles, a home run, 11 RBI, and three runs scored.
DAVIS DOES IT: Leonard Davis has hits in five consecutive games as well...He is 8-for-22 (.364) with three doubles, a home run, six RBI, three runs, and two walks.
PROMOTIONS: Infielder Trevor Lawhorn has been called up from Low-A Hagerstown and placed on Potomac's 25-man roster, replacing Frank Diaz who advanced to Triple-A Columbus. Lawhorn appeared in 28 games with Hagerstown this season hitting .244 with two home runs and nine RBI. The North Carolina-native played primarily second and third base, but was also frequently used as a designated hitter.
Signed as minor league free agent by the Washington Nationals in 2007, Lawhorn receives his first call-up to Advanced-A since 2006. The 25-year-old spent parts of the 2007 season with the Sioux Falls Canaries of the American Association, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers of the Midwest League, and Hagerstown. In 26 games with the Suns, he hit .267 with two home runs and 18 RBI.
Pitcher Joe Norrito returned to the team today, after making a spot start with Double-A Harrisburg yesterday. Despite tossing five innings and allowing only three earned runs, Norrito suffered the loss against the Akron Aeros.
