Warthogs grab two wins

Salem, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, saw Winston-Salem take both a suspended game and a regularly-scheduled nine-inning contest Friday night on Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium by finals of 5-0 and 3-1. The Warthogs bullpen tossed six scoreless innings in the two finishes.

In the completion of the game from May 8th, the Warthogs sprinted to a four-run seventh out of the gate. On the second pitch he saw, Brandon Allen cracked a solo home run over the right-field wall against lefty David Qualben. Later, Anderson Gomes and Paulo Orlando poked RBI singles and Greg Paiml plated a run with a groundout in the inning for am 4-0 edge. The final run came across on a double-play grounder from Gomes in the eighth.

Winston-Salem's pitching shushed the Avalanche in game two. Three Warthogs-Matt Zaleski, Ryan Rote and Kanekoa Texeira--combined to allow just one unearned run in a 3-1 victory. Winston-Salem again pounced early. The first three batters of the game reached against Casey Hudspeth including Javier Colina who poked an RBI single. Two batters later, the lead expanded to two as John Shelby's fly ball brought Salvador Sanchez home.

In the fourth, Winston-Salem went up three on a solo home run from C.J. Retherford with two out. It was the first longball yielded by Casey Hudspeth since May 2nd.

In the loss, Hudspeth completed his third eight-inning outing of the month. Jimmy Van Ostrand went 2-for-4 to up his homestand batting average to .450 (9-20).

Salem (22-31) faces Winston-Salem for two more tomorrow. The first seven-imning game begins at 5:07 PM with Douglas Arguello facing Matt Long. The second game is scheduled to follow 30 minutes thereafter.
