Myrtle Beach Pelicans (25-13) vs. Potomac Nationals (22-15)
Wednesday, May 14 -- 7:05 PM
Pfitzner Stadium -- Woodbridge, VA
Game #39, Road Game #24
TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: Entering game three of a four-game series, the Pelicans are on a season-long six-game win streak, and have also won nine of their last ten contests. Myrtle Beach currently boasts the best record in the Carolina League (25-13) and have been in first place in the Southern Division since April 23rd. The birds swept a doubleheader from the Nationals last night, claiming game one, 6-1, and the nightcap, 1-0. The Pelicans have won eight consecutive series and will have two chances to stretch that string to nine in tonight's game three and tomorrow's game four
TODAY'S STARTING PITCHERS: The Pelicans will send right-hander Ryne Reynoso to the hill tonight against the top-pitching prospect in the Washington Nationals' organization, Ross Detwiler.
Reynoso: Pitched well, but departed due to frigid temperatures and an escalating pitch count in his last outing. The righty lasted four innings, permitting just one unearned in four innings on two hits. He walked one while striking out four. The Pelicans won the ballgame, but Reynoso was ineligible for the victory, snapping his win-streak at three consecutive starts. Prior the outing, Reynoso had turned in exactly six innings in his three previous outings. The birds are 6-1 in his starts, which is the best among all Pelicans' starters, including the recently promoted Tommy Hanson (5-2).
The Sun Valley, Idaho native was signed by the Braves on November 9, 2006. He played his college baseball at Boston College. In his first professional season, he was the closer for the Rome Braves. He secured a team-best nine saves in 40 total appearances.
Detwiler: Is making his first appearance against the Pelicans, after his spot was missed in the rotation in the first two series between the two teams. His last outing was among his strongest of the season. He turned in six innings on the road against Kinston, permitting just one earned run on four hits to win for the second time this season.
Detwiler is the top-rated pitching prospect in the Nationals' organization according to Baseball America. The 22-year old was drafted with the sixth overall selection in the 2007 draft out of SouthWest Missouri State University. He opened his professional career with four starts for the GCL Nationals before jumping to Potomac. He was briefly called up to Washington, where he pitched one scoreless inning.
TOODLES TO TOMMY: During their game two win over Wilmington on Saturday, the Pelicans learned that their ace, right-hander Tommy Hanson, had been promoted to Mississippi (AA). The 21-year old will leave a large void, having posted a 3-1 record in seven starts with an ERA of 0.90 (2nd - CL). At the time of his promotion, the two-time Carolina League Pitcher of the Week had 49 strikeouts, also second in the league. He made his first start for the M-Braves last night, earning his first win, while allowing just one run on five hits over 6 1/3 innings against Montgomery.
NEARLY A PERFECT 10 PART TWO: The Pelicans have won six straight games and have also claimed nine of their last 10 games. That mark is tops in the Carolina League by a full three games over both Winston-Salem and Kinston, who are both 6-4 during that stretch. The birds have used that stretch to increase their lead in the Southern Division to 6 1/2 games.
ROAD WARRIORS PART THREE: The Pelicans are currently riding a league-high seven-game road winning streak stretching back to their game three win over the Salem Avalanche on May 3rd. Myrtle Beach is 16-7 on the road, including 5-0 on their current trip.
