Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

WOODBRIDGE, VA - Michael Martinez set the tone with a lead-off home run as the Potomac Nationals snapped the Pelicans six-game win streak with a 5-4 victory in game three of a four-game series from Pfitzner Stadium on Wednesday night.

For the first time in the series, the P-Nats jumped to the early lead as Martinez lofted a 3-2 pitch from Ryne Reynoso over the wall in right field for his first home run of the season, and Potomac led, 1-0. It was just the second home run of Martinez's career.

The lead doubled in the second inning, as shortstop Seth Bynum connected on an opposite-field home run that landed in nearly the exact same spot. Bynum's fourth homer of the season and second against the Pelicans ran the lead to 2-0.

The Pelicans soared to the lead in the third inning, plating three earned runs off of P-Nats' starter Ross Detwiler to lead 3-2. Yohan Silva got the rally started as he led off the inning with a double to right-center field. Travis Jones followed with a double off the wall in center field, advancing Silva to third base. A batter later, Tyler Flowers rolled a swinging bunt single up the third base line to load the bases with one out. Ernesto Mejia followed with a two-run single to left-center field to score two runs and tie the game, 2-2. Concepcion Rodriguez walked to load the bases again, and Jon Mark Owings gave the birds their first lead with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Potomac tied the game with a run in the fourth inning, before Matt Rogelstad delivered the third home run of the night off Reynoso to lead off the fifth. His solo homer made it a 4-3 ballgame, and a two-out Frand Diaz double later in the inning would make it a two-run lead, 5-3.

A throwing error brought the Pelicans back within a run in the sixth. With Phillip Britton and Robert Marcial aboard with back-to-back singles, P-Nats' catcher Jhonatan Solano attempted to throw behind Marcial at first base, but instead launched the throw all the way into the right field corner. The errant toss allowed Britton to score from second and slice the lead to 5-4.

Yunior Novoa pitched the eighth, and despite allowing a Rodriguez lead-off triple, got through the inning without the Pelicans tying the score. Closer Adam Carr came on in the ninth and collected his third save, striking out Brandon Hicks and Tyler Flowers to end the ballgame.

Detwiler (3-2) earned his third win of the season, working five innings and permitting three runs. Reynoso was hit with his second loss, conceding five earned runs and three home runs through five innings of work.

The series finale is slated for a 7:05 PM start on Thursday night at Pfitzner Stadium. RHP Gonzalo Lopez (2-2, 5.35) will make the start for Myrtle Beach against RHP Craig Stammen (0-1, 1.67) for the P-Nats.
