Potomac Nationals News Release
WOODBRIDGE, Va.- Another lackluster offense performance was not in the script Wednesday night at Pfitzner Stadium. Potomac finally broke through with the bats thanks to home runs from Michael Martinez, Seth Bynum, and Matt Rogelstad in a 5-4 win over Myrtle Beach.
The Nationals scored one run in 14 innings in last night's doubleheader, and they managed to match that after just one batter tonight. Martinez connected for his first home run of the season to lead off the game against right-hander Ryne Reynoso, his second RBI of the season, which gave the P-Nats an early 1-0 lead.
Bynum continued the home run trail for Potomac in the next inning launching a solo shot over the right field wall for his fourth homer of the season making the score 2-0. The home run would not be the last time Bynum added to his season RBI total during the contest.
Meanwhile, Ross Detwiler's second consecutive win and third overall would not come easily. The left-hander entering tonight's start had not won at Pfitzner Stadium yet this season.
Despite their 2-0 deficit, the Pelicans answered in the top of the third with three runs. Former Carolina League Player of the Week Ernesto Mejia knocked a two RBI single to tie the game. Despite allowing eight hitters to bat in the inning, Detwiler continued to battle and was able to limit the damage retiring Jon Mark Owings on a sacrifice fly to right field and Phillip Britton on a struck out. However, Myrtle Beach held the 3-2 advantage. Detwiler lasted five innings allowing the three runs on five hits while striking out six en route to the victory.
Potomac responded in both the fourth and fifth innings providing a sufficient amount of offense for Detwiler. Bynum's one-out single in the fourth drove in Frank Diaz to tie the game after Diaz started the inning with a single. Bynum's two RBI in the game extended his team-leading total to 22. Then, Matt Rogelstad's leadoff solo home run off Reynoso (3-2) in the fifth inning capped the P-Nats scoring as they led at that point 5-3.
Potomac's bullpen ensured the win for Detwiler. Clint Everts, Yunior Novoa, and Adam Carr provided four innings of relief and surrendered just one unearned run on three hits.
Leading 5-4, Yunior Novoa's outing quickly became exciting as he give up a leadoff triple to Concepcion Rodriguez in the top of the eighth inning. Novoa continued his dominance against the Carolina League retiring the next three hitters in order, including two strikeouts and stranding the tying run at third.
Adam Carr pitched the top of the ninth inning to earn his team leading third save of the season ending the Nationals two-game losing streak.
The Nationals and Pelicans will wrap up their four-game series tomorrow night at Pfitzner Stadium. Craig Stammen (0-1, 1.67), will make his first start of the season at home and his third overall against Gonzalo Lopez (2-2, 5.35). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
