Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Pelicans and Potomac Nationals (Washington Nationals) conclude their three-game series with the series finale tonight at Pfitzner Stadium at 7:05 PM. The P-Nats stormed from behind to take game two of the series last night, erasing a 3-0 deficit in the eighth inning and winning, 4-3, with a lone run in the ninth. The Pelicans will be attempting to avoid a sweep with a victory tonight. Tonight's game concludes a seven-game week-long season opening road trip for Myrtle Beach. They will return to Myrtle Beach following the game to open their first homestand of the season on Friday. They will welcome in the Frederick Keys (April 11-13) for a three-game series and the Winston-Salem Warthogs (Chicago White Sox) for a three-game set (April 14-16).

TODAY'S STARTING PITCHERS: RHP Deunte Heath (1-0, 1.80) will make his second start for the Pelicans tonight against RHP Jhonny Nunez (0-1, 7.71) who will also be making his second start for Potomac.

Heath: Got off to a fine start to the 2008 season with five strong innings in his first start against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Heath was the victor, allowing just two hits and a lone run as the Pelicans defeated the Blue Rocks, 4-3, in the second game of the season. Heath walked two and struck out two in his outing. The 22-year old right-hander is a native of Decatur, GA, and was selected by the Braves in the 19th round of the 2006 draft out of the University of Tennessee. He split the 2007 season between Rome (A) and Myrtle Beach (Advanced-A).

Nunez: 22-year old Nunez got off to a rocky start to the season in his first start against the Salem Avalanche. The Dominican born right-hander conceded four earned runs on six hits over just 4.2 innings. He was saddled with the loss, but did strike out four.

BULLISH PEN: The Pelicans bullpen has been sensational during the first week of the season. Despite the fact that the P-Nats rallied off of the Birds' pen last night, three of the four runs were unearned. Thus far, the Myrtle Beach bullpen has allowed just three earned runs in 31.2 total innings. That total equates to a remarkably thin 0.85 ERA and is a large reason why the Pelicans boast the lowest team ERA in the Carolina League (2.10 ERA).

STREAKS AND SUCH: Tommy Hanson turned in another six scoreless innings last night, and leads the Carolina League with no ERA in the most (11) innnings pitched. Pelicans' catcher Tyler Flowers has displayed a patient approach at the plate while reaching base safely in all six Pelicans' contests this season. Flowers has walked a league-high ten times through six games, and along with a batting average of .294, he is currently fourth in the league in on-base percentage (.556)

RECENT TRANSACTIONS: LHP Lee Hyde, RHP Jose Santiago, LHP Jon Venters; LHP Tyler Wilson and OF Quentin Davis open the season on the Disabled List, and were placed there on Friday, April 4th.
