Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Javier Colina powered the Winston-Salem Warthogs offense to a 5-3 win over Lynchburg on Thursday night at Ernie Shore Field. Colina finished 2-for-4 with four RBI, including a tie-breaking three-run home run in the deciding sixth inning. Warthogs closer Kanekoa Texeira allowed the tying runs to reach base in the ninth inning, but struck out Steve Lerud to clinch the victory for Winston-Salem.

The Hillcats struck first with a trio of singles in the first inning as Kent Sakamoto knocked in Brian Friday to give Lynchburg a 1-0 lead. The Hillcats extended their advantage to 2-0 in the second inning when Albert Laboy plated Alex Presley with an RBI single to left field.

A pair of two-out RBI doubles allowed the Warthogs to knot the score at two. Anderson Gomes reached on an error to lead off the fourth inning and scored the Warthogs first run on a double by Javier Colina. In the next frame, C.J. Retherford drove a two-bagger to the left field wall to bring Billy Killian across the dish with the tying run.

Winston-Salem took the lead in emphatic fashion in the sixth inning when Colina crushed a three-run shot off Lynchburg starting pitcher Tony Watson. It was the Warthogs first home run of the season and provided Winston-Salem with a 5-2 cushion.

Lynchburg manufactured a run in the seventh inning when Jim Negrych reached on an infield single and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Sakamoto followed with his second RBI single of the game to cut the Hillcats deficit to 5-3, but that was all Lynchburg could muster.

Chicago White Sox 2007 first round pick and top overall prospect LHP Aaron Poreda battled thru five innings of work. The southpaw limited the Hillcats to one earned run on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts, but did not factor in the decision. Reliever Steven Spurgeon (1-0) worked a scoreless inning to collect the win while Texeira picked up his first save of the season.

Watson (0-2) took the loss for Lynchburg after giving up five runs on seven hits in five innings pitched. The top four hitters in the Hillcats order each tallied a pair of hits, but it wasn't enough as Winston-Salem took two of three in the series.

The Warthogs continue their six-game home stand by welcoming the Salem Avalanche to Ernie Shore Field on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 7 PM with RHP Jacob Rasner (0-0, 0.00) making his Carolina League debut for Winston-Salem. The final two games of the series are set for Saturday at 6 PM and Sunday at 2 PM.
