Kinston Indians News Release

Kinston captured their first win of the season in memorable fashion with a 6-5, 16 inning victory over Frederick on Thursday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. The game took a little under five hours to finish.

The K-Tribe was one strike away from a 2-1 win in the bottom of the ninth inning, when Frederick's Brandon Tripp, Matt Wieters and Todd Davison unleashed back to back to back singles to tie the game at two. Frederick took a 4-2 lead in the top of the tenth inning, before Kinston starred in the comeback role. In the bottom of the tenth, Beau Mills and Jared Goedert led off with back to back singles. The duo advanced with a Nick Weglarz ground out. Mills scored from third base on a wild pitch to cut the Keys lead to one. Kinston's Carlos Rivero tied the game with a single driving in Goedert one batter later.

Things were uneventful until the top of the sixteenth inning, when Frederick scored a run thanks to a Kinston throwing error. The K-Tribe responded again in the bottom of the sixteenth with another late inning comeback. Mills and Goedert again led off the comeback with back to back singles. An intentional walk to Nick Weglarz loaded the bases for Rivero. Mills scored on a wild pitch to tie the score at five, before Rivero drove in the winning run with an RBI single. Rivero finished the game 3-for-7 with two RBI's.

Both teams used six pitchers in the 16 inning marathon. Kinston's Josh Tomlin picked up the win. Heath Taylor pitched four and two-third innings in extra frames, giving up just one hit, walking none and striking out three. Jeanmar Gomez had a strong start for the K-Tribe, striking out nine in five innings of work. Chris Amador took the loss for Frederick.

The K-Tribe returns to action Friday night against Potomac in Woodbridge, Virginia. First pitch 7:05, Paolo Espino will take the mound for Kinston.
