Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Salem, VA - The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, saw Wilmington's Blue Rocks score four runs in the ninth inning in a 5-4 win Thursday night on Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. The Rocks (2-5) watched their 1-0 lead evaporate earlier as the Avs (4-2) scored twice in both the seventh and the eighth.
The Avalanche carried a 4-1 edge into the ninth as righty Jason Dominguez aimed for his second save. The leadoff batter, Joe Dickerson, punched a single to right and Anthony Seratelli walked. After the runners advanced on a wild pitch, Wilver Perez bounced a ball to shortstop that Wladimir Sutil threw wide of first and Dickerson scored. Next, Josh Johnson clubbed a two-run triple to let center and Jeff Howell capped the scoring with a single of his own.
In the home half, Salem mustered a single from Greg Buchanan but could not plate the equalizing run.
Trailing 1-0, the Avs got to the Wilmington bullpen in the seventh. With two out, Jimmy Van Ostrand singled and Orlando Rosales doubled. Next, Koby Clemens socked a two-run single to give the Avs their first led. In the eighth, Salem swelled the advantage to three on an RBI double by Mark Ori and a Van Ostrand RBI single.
The Avs were stymied through five innings and a third by Wilmington starter Matt Kniginyzky. The righty yielded just one hit and three base runners in his second start of the season. On the other side, Salem's Polin Trinidad yielded just one run in five innings.
The Avs take to the road for the first time in '08 beginning Friday at 7 PM in Winston-Salem. Righty Casey Hudspeth faces Warthog Jacob Rasner.
