Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - It took a while, but the Myrtle Beach Pelicans dropped their third straight game for the first time this season. Frederick Keys' starter Bobby Bundy was outstanding in six innings while Brian Ward and Tyler Townsend added two-run home runs for the Keys in their 5-1 win over Pelicans at BB&T Coastal Field on Friday.

The Keys got on the board quickly against Birds' starter Joe Wieland, who entered the game as the Carolina League ERA leader with a mark of 0.95. Kyle Hudson led off the first with a double that appeared to be caught by Ryan Strausborger in left field. Trent Mummey singled him to third before Tyler Townsend drove in Hudson with a groundout.

The Birds tied the score in the bottom half of the first when Ryan Strausborger tripled into the left field corner and Leury Garcia grounded out to bring in a run.

Frederick took the lead right back though when Dale Mollenhauer doubled with one out and Ward belted a long home run to left to put the Keys up 3-1. They added two more in the third when Townsend sent his third homer of the season over the right-center field fence to make it a 5-1 game.

Bundy gave up just the first-inning run in his start, and allowed only six hits. The right-hander struck out seven and did not walk a batter. The Keys got a scoreless seventh from Keith Moreland before Dan Klein worked a shutout eighth and ninth to secure the victory, their fifth in their last six games.

Aside from the two mistakes that turned into long balls, Wieland was solid. In six innings, he allowed five runs on eight hits, striking out five without issuing a walk. The five punch-outs gave him the Carolina League lead in strikeouts with 28, as he moved ahead of Kinston lefty Drew Pomeranz.

Friday brought the Pelicans debut of right-handed reliever Zach Osborne, who was called up from low-A Hickory on Thursday. The Houston native pitched two scoreless innings of relief, ending his night by striking out the side in the eighth.

Strausborger had a single to go along with the triple, giving him his team-high ninth multi-hit game of the year. Leury Garcia and newcomer Mitch Hilligoss also had two hits each for the Pelicans.

The Pelicans and Keys will play the middle game of the weekend series with a Saturday night contest at BB&T Coastal Field. A pair of right-handers square off as Ryan Kelly goes for Myrtle Beach against Frederick's Jacob Rasner. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
