Pelicans Game Notes

April 29, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

SO WE MEET AGAIN: The Pelicans will go up against the same three starters they faced when these two teams squared off in Frederick two weeks ago. Right-handers Bobby Bundy and Jacob Rasner will start the first two games of the series and southpaw Nathan Moreau will go in the finale. The three threw in that same order when the Keys took two out of three against Myrtle Beach.

BOLDEN BREAKS OUT: Jared Bolden kept it up with another big game on Thursday. After a first-inning strikeout, he singled in the fifth to give him a base knock in three straight games. The next inning, Bolden doubled into the gap in left center to score Santiago Chirino to cut the Potomac lead to 7-4. He capped his night with a single in his final at bat in the eighth, making this his first three-hit game of the season. Jared has a hit in seven of his last eight at bats and has multiple hits in each of the past three games. Bolden started the season with a 2-for-31 slide, but got on the right track last night.

SPEED KILLS: Shortstop Leury Garcia extended his hitting streak to seven games with a first-inning single off P-Nats starter Trevor Holder. He immediately swiped second base for his ninth stolen base of the year. He was just getting started though as he almost single-handedly put the Pelicans on the board with his blazing speed. Garcia tagged up to third on a fly ball to left center and the throw from J.R. Higley was wild. After Holder recovered, Garcia raced home just ahead of the throw to the plate to go up 1-0. The steal tied him for the league lead with Kinston outfielder Tyler Holt, Potomac second baseman Jeff Kobernus stole a base last night against the Pelicans to join them atop the leaderboard. Leury has batted .400 (12-30) during the seven-game run. After starting the campaign 1-for-19 and 4-for-31, Garcia has raised his batting average to .275 as he's settled into the two spot in the order behind Ryan Strausborger.

SAY HELLO TO THE NEW GUY: With Travis Adair earning a promotion to the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders, the Pelicans brought in Mitch Hilligoss, who arrives in Myrtle Beach coming out of extended spring training. Mitch got his first game action of 2011 in Thursday's loss to the Nationals. Starting at designated hitter and batting fifth, he was retired in his first four trips to the plate. But he singled in the ninth for his first hit as a Pelican and came around to score on a wild pitch. The Windsor, IL native split time between Bakersfield and Frisco last year after coming over from the Yankees' organization in a January 2010 trade for OF Greg Golson. Mitch spent the 2008 and 2009 seasons at high-A Tampa after a great 2007 season for the Charleston RiverDogs. Hilligoss batted .310 and set a South Atlantic League record with a 38-game hitting streak.
