Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WILMINGTON, DE - Jake Odorizzi pitched seven dominating innings and Winston-Salem's bats never warmed up on a chilly night in northern Delaware, losing 4-0 to the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Friday at Frawley Stadium. Odorizzi struck out ten batters as the Dash were shut out for the first time this season.

Wilmington (13-7) got its first run in the second inning against Joe Serafin. John Whittleman, who hit a grand slam on Easter Sunday at BB&T Ballpark, pounded a 3-2 offering over the right field fence for a solo home run, his fifth of the season.

The Blue Rocks added to their advantage with another long ball in the fourth inning. After Tim Ferguson led off with a single, Jose Bonilla blasted Serafin's first pitch out to right for a two-run shot that made it 3-0.

Another run came home in the sixth against Winston reliever Orlando Santos. Ferguson doubled and then went to third base on a wild pitch. Santos threw another wild pitch later in the inning, allowing Ferguson to come home and finish the game's scoring.

Odorizzi (1-0) pitched one of the finest games in Carolina League this season, mixing an overpowering fastball with a knee-bucking curveball. He allowed an Ian Gac double to start the second inning, but set down the next 15 men he faced afterward. That streak ended in the seventh, when Jose Martinez singled to lead off the inning. Andy Wilkins doubled later in the frame, but the threat was stymied when Odorizzi stuck out Kyle Shelton looking to end the inning.

The Dash (8-13) got leadoff singles from Martinez and Jared Mitchell in the ninth, but Blue Rocks closer Kevin Chapman retired the next three hitters to finish off Winston-Salem and earn his fifth save.

Odorizzi worked seven terrific innings for the win, yielding three hits and no walks while striking out ten. Serafin (0-1) took the loss after giving up three runs on six hits, five for extra bases, over five innings.
