Pelicans Fall to Cannon Ballers 8-0 on Friday Night

In the first game of the second half of the season, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans gave up a pair of runs in four separate innings in an 8-0 loss to the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers on Friday night. The loss moved the Birds to 39-27 and 0-1 in the first half, while Kannapolis began the new half with a win and now stands at 36-30.

All six hits for Myrtle Beach were singles as Juan Mora (2-4) led the team with a pair of hits. The Pelicans left seven on base and went just 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position.

Starter Nick Hull (3-2) lasted just three innings with four runs, three earned allowed off seven hits and a pair of walks. Jose Romero followed with two more earned runs off a home run in his only inning. Koen Moreno struck out five through his three innings out of the bullpen.

The Cannon Ballers came alive for 12 hits with 11 of them being singles. Jacob Burke (1-3, HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB) hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth for the only extra-base hit. Mario Camilletti (2-5, 2 RBI) also brought in a pair of runs from the top spot in the lineup. Eight of the nine batters in the Kannapolis lineup recorded a hit in the victory.

Just two pitchers were used with starter Tyler Schweitzer (6-2) earning the win with five shutout frames and just three hits allowed with three strikeouts and a walk. Drew McDaniel tossed the final four innings with three hits allowed and three more strikeouts to pick up the save.

Kannapolis took an early lead with a two-run second. With runners on second and third and two outs, Camilletti grounded a single to left as both runners scored for the early advantage.

Two more came in the third as Jhoneiker Betancourt and Johnabiell Laureano both hit back-to-back RBI singles to bring the Kannapolis lead to 4-0.

For the third consecutive inning, the Cannon Ballers had two runs cross the plate in the fourth. With one on and one out, Burke hit a two-run homer to left-center field for his fourth of the season to extend the lead to 6-0.

After a silent fifth, the Cannon Ballers got back to it with two more runs in their half of the sixth. Tim Elko hit a single with Burke on first as Burke would later score on a throwing error by Ismael Mena in center. Bryce Willits followed with an RBI single to score Elko for an 8-0 lead.

The series continues on Saturday at 7:00 at the Cannon Ballers have taken two of the first three games from the Pelicans.
