Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
FREDERICK, MD - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans got great pitching in game one but fell 1-0, then they got early offense in game two but eventually fell 5-4. The Pelicans have yet to win this season in a doubleheader and have now lost all four doubleheader games by one run each.
The Pelicans got a solid performance from Edgar Osuna in game one as he was perfect through four innings. The Frederick Keys were able to get a leadoff walk from Brandon Waring who came around to score on a double by Tyler Hensen and that's all the Keys would need in game one. Osuna (2-3) wound up being the tough luck loser as he allowed just the one run over six innings while striking out eight and walking just one.
Tim Bascom (3-3) was equally as tough on the Pelicans as he got the win going six and one-thirds innings allowing just two hits and walking one. Luis Lebron (4) notched the save by recording the final two outs in the seventh.
In game two, the Pelicans struck first with a run in the opening frame. Donell Linares doubled and came around to score on a groundout by Jason Heyward to put the Pelicans on top 1-0.
Myrtle Beach would add two more runs in the second. The first was on Cody Johnson's Minor League Baseball leading 12th home run of the year. Benji Johnson doubled two batters and scored on a Michael Fisher single to put the Pelicans up 3-0.
The Keys answered with a run in the bottom of the second and then added another in the third before they would get all they needed in the fourth.
Matt Angle doubled to open the bottom of the fourth and scored two batters later on a Kraig Binick single. Waring reached on an error a batter later before Hensen doubled both runs home to make it 5-3.
The Pelicans tacked on another run in the top of the seventh. Jon Mark Owings, who singled to start the inning, scored on a balk by Ryan Ouellete which made the score 5-4 and that's how the game stayed.
Pelican starter Jeff Locke lasted just three innings and didn't factor into the decision. Michael Mehlich (1-2) took the loss allowing the three runs in the fourth on three hits. Brett Bordes (2-1) earned the win out of the bullpen for the Keys as he went two innings while allowing just one hit. Ouellette (1) got the save despite allowing an unearned run in the seventh.
The series continues Wednesday night as the Pelicans send right hander Erik Cordier against lefty Nate Nery of Frederick. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick, MD.
