Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Winston-Salem, NC - Lynchburg starting pitcher Matt McSwain and a pair of relievers silenced the Winston-Salem bats in a 6-2 Hillcats victory on Tuesday afternoon at Wake Forest Baseball Park. McSwain (2-1) limited the Dash to two runs on four hits in a season-high 6.2 innings of work to garner the win. Relievers Chris Cullen and Michael Dubee kept Winston-Salem (15-16) scoreless the rest of the way in winning the opener of this three-game series.
The Dash broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with a run off McSwain. Shortstop Greg Paiml doubled and first baseman Jimmy Gallagher followed with a double to put runners on second and third. McSwain unleashed a wild pitch that scored Paiml to give Winston-Salem a 1-0 lead.
Lynchburg answered with four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Ray Chang and Alex Presley smacked back-to-back RBI singles off Dash starting pitcher Johnnie Lowe. After Jordy Mercer lifted an RBI sacrifice fly, Pedro Alvarez lined a run-scoring single into left field to give the Hillcats a 4-1 lead.
Winston-Salem scored a run in the sixth inning when Paiml was hit by a pitch and moved to third base on another double by Gallagher. Third baseman Brent Morel contributed an RBI sacrifice fly to cut the Dash deficit to two.
The Hillcats added a pair of runs in the eighth inning off Dash reliever Jacob Rasner. After a one-out walk to Matt Hague, Mile Durham tripled to bring the first run across. Kris Watts followed with a single to extend the Lynchburg advantage to 6-2.
Lowe (2-1) matched a season-high with seven innings pitched but surrendered four runs on five hits to suffer the loss. It was the first time this season the Dash have lost in one of Lowe's six starts.
These teams will square off in the second of this three-game series on Wednesday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. The Dash will send RHP Daniel Hudson (0-0, 0.00) to the mound, while the Hillcats will counter with LHP Justin Wilson (2-2, 5.56). The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Single-game tickets are also available for games at Wake Forest Baseball Park through June 17 and can be purchased online at www.wsdash.com or by calling the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
