Frederick Keys News Release

The Frederick Keys seem to be breaking out of an early season slump. They won their third and fourth games in a row this evening, by sweeping a double-header from the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. The Keys won the first game 1-0, and the second contest 5-4.

RHP Tim Bascom started for the Keys in game one. He went up against Pelicans' LHP Edgar Osuna. The game was a classic pitcher's duel. Osuna retired the first 12 Keys hitters he faced, but got into trouble in the fifth. Frederick 1B Brandon Waring led off the inning with a walk. 3B Tyler Henson then hit a double down the right field line, knocking in Waring and giving Frederick a 1-0 lead.

That's all Bascom would need. The right-hander pitched 6.1 scoreless innings. He surrendered just two hits and one walk on the way to his third win of the season. Osuna allowed just one run on one hit while striking out eight on the way to a tough-luck loss. He's now 2-3. RHP Luis Lebron relieved Bascom. He recorded the final two outs to pick up his fourth save of the year.

Game one was just 1:27 long, the shortest game in Frederick Keys history.

Game two was slightly more eventful. Frederick had LHP Chris Salberg on the hill, who was in trouble early. With one out in the first, 3B Donell Linares doubled. He reached third on a wild pitch, and scored on a ground out to give the Pelicans the early lead.

Carolina League homerun leader Cody Johnson led off the top of the second with a tape-measure homerun, his 12th blast of the season.

The Pelicans weren't done in the second. C Benji Johnson doubled, and later scored on 2B Michael Fisher's RBI single to make it a 3-0 Myrtle Beach lead.

The Keys started chipping away in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded and two men out, Myrtle Beach LHP Jeff Locke hit 2B Bobby Stevens with a pitch, putting the Keys on the scoreboard.

A HBP came back to hurt locke again in the third. Henson reached after getting hit by a Locke pitch. He stole second and third, then scored on C Caleb Joseph's RBI-single to make it 3-2.

Frederick would take the lead in the fourth. With one out, CF Matt Angle doubled. He stole third, and was driven in by LF Kraig Binick on a single up the middle, tying the game at three. Waring hit a ball to third with two men down. Linares booted the ball, allowing Waring to reach. With two on and two out, Henson hit a shallow fly ball to right. RF Jon Mark Owings dove for it, but couldn't get there. Two runs scored on what turned into antoher double for Henson. It gave Frederick a 5-3 lead.

The Pelicans scored a run in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough. LHP Brett Bordes got the win after tossing two shut out innings in relief. RHP Michael Melich got the loss. RHP Ryan Ouellette picked up his first save of the year.

The Keys and Pelicans will play game three of this series tomorrow evening at Harry Grove Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00. For ticket information, contact our box office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS.
