Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Kinston's Beau Mills scored the winning run on Michael Fisher's throwing error with two away in the top of the eighth and Kinston came from behind to score a 3-2 victory over Myrtle Beach before 4,740 fans at BB&T Coastal Field Sunday night. The Indians improved to 41-28 in the second half and 86-52 overall, while the Pelicans fell to 29-40 in the second half and 59-79 on the year.

Myrtle Beach broke through first against Sung-Wei Tseng, as Derrick Arnold worked a walk with two away in the bottom of the second and then stole second base. Jerry Verastegui then gave the Pelicans the advantage with an RBI single to center to make it 1-0. The Birds doubled up against Tseng in the fourth, as Chase Fontaine singled with one away and went to second on a groundout. Hot-hitting Brandon Monk then came through with an RBI single up the middle to make it 2-0.

The bats went silent after that however, as Myrtle Beach collected only three singles over the final five innings and left the door open for the Indians. Nick Weglarz promptly got Kinston on the board in the top of the fifth, slamming his first Carolina League home run out to right field to cut the advantage to 2-1. Kinston tied it an inning later when Wes Hodges doubled with two away before moving to third on a wild pitch from starter Dustin Evans and scoring on a passed ball by Verastegui to tie the game.

The winning rally began when Mills socked a ground-rule double to left with one away off Birds reliever Brett Butts. Hodges grounded out, and with first base open and two away Myrtle Beach elected to play the percentages and intentionally walk the left-handed hitting John Drennen to get a righty-righty match-up with Jerad Head. The strategy looked to pay off when Head rolled a ground ball to short, but Fisher had trouble getting the ball out of his glove and ended up bouncing a throw to first, which skipped past Larry Williams and allowed Mills to come around with the deciding run.

Matt Meyer (3-4) earned the win for Kinston with 2.1 shutout innings of relief, while Butts (0-1) was charged with the loss. Carolina League Relief Pitcher of the Year and Wisconsin native Scott Roehl worked the ninth for his league-leading 24th save. Evans was at least able to close his season on a high note, earning his fifth quality start of the year after allowing just two runs (one earned) on three hits over six innings, his longest start since May 21st. Willie Cabrera paced the offense with a 3-4 night, and Jordan Schafer collected two hits to push his total for the season to 175, the most in all of minor league baseball.

The finale of this three-game series and the final game of the season for Myrtle Beach is set for 7:05 p.m. Monday night as left-hander Carlos Sencion (2-1, 2.62 ERA) takes the hill for the Birds opposite Kinston's Steve Wright (2-2, 7.74 ERA). The game broadcast begins at 6:45 p.m. with the RSC Equipment Rental pre-game show on ESPN Radio the Team (93.7 FM, 93.9 FM, and 1050 AM) and online at www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com. Notes: Outfielder Quentin Davis appeared in his 133rd game of the season for Myrtle Beach, tying the single-season franchise record originally set by Jason Ross in 1999. Davis will break the record if he plays Monday...Davis has 492 at-bats this year, five away from tying the single-season record of 497 set by Marcus Giles in 1999.
