Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - In a wildly entertaining game, Winston-Salem overcame a stellar performance by David Hernandez and took advantage of two critical errors by Frederick in the tenth inning to claim a 4-1 victory over the Keys on Sunday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Hernandez struck out a Frederick record 18 Warthogs in nine innings of work, but it wasn't enough as two errors by Frederick shortstop Tyler Henson in the tenth inning proved to be the difference.
With the game tied at one entering the tenth inning, Frederick went to the bullpen and sent Ryan Ouellette to the mound. Stefan Gartrell and C.J. Lang hit back-to-back singles with one out to start the Warthogs rally. Rod Allen Jr. hit a potential inning-ending double play that was booted by Henson to load the bases. After an RBI single by Robbie Hudson gave the Warthogs a 2-1 lead, Tyler Reves hit another ground ball to Henson. The Frederick shortstop fielded the ball cleanly, but made an errant throw to the plate that allowed two more runs to score giving Winston-Salem a 4-1 cushion.
The defensive mistakes wasted a spectacular start from Hernandez, who struck out the first seven batters of the game. He broke the previous Frederick single game record of 16 strikeouts by Arthur Rhodes in 1990. The Carolina League high is 20, which has been accomplished four times with the last occurrence by Brian Fisher of Durham in 1982.
Winston-Salem put a run on the board in the fourth inning when Paulo Orlando and Robert Valido led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After a Daron Roberts bunt moved the runners to second and third, Hernandez unleashed a wild pitch that allowed Orlando to score.
The Keys tied the game in the seventh inning when Ryan Finan singled to start the inning and Kennard Jones entered the game as his pinch runner. After seven consecutive throws to first base to check on Jones, Omogrosso fired a wild pitch off the mask of the home plate umpire, which allowed Jones to advance from first to third base. Pete Maestrales dribbled an RBI single to left field to score Jones and knot the game at one.
Warthogs starting pitcher Brian Omogrosso, who did not allow a hit until the sixth inning, worked six innings and limited the Keys to one run on two hits. Omogrosso also struck out five, but did not factor in the decision. Jon Link (1-0) escaped a one-out bases loaded jam in the ninth inning as he tossed 2 1/3 innings of relief to collect his first win since joining the Warthogs.
The Warthogs will conclude the 2007 season with the series finale against Frederick on Monday, September 3 at Harry Grove Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 PM with RHP Garry Bakker (2-6, 3.96) taking the mound for Winston-Salem. The Keys are expected to start RHP Jason Berken (8-9, 4.75).
