Salem, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, mustered just four hit Sunday night on Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium in a 9-0 loss to Lynchburg. Righty Serguey Linares threw six scoreless innings as the Hillcat starter.

Salem (37-32) was retired in order through the first 11 batters of the game for the Avalanche. In the process, Lynchburg (26-43) snatched a 1-0 lead on three consecutive hits in the second inning. Denny Nino rolled a ball down the left-field line for a double that scored Wanell Macia.

In the fifth, the lead grew to two as Tripper Johnson's sacrifice fly scored Pedro Powell. The following inning saw Lynchburg score two more on a wild pitch/sacrifice fly combination against reliever Matt Sweeney. Lynchburg's scoring finished with two in the eighth and three more in the ninth on a home run from Ron Davenport.

Of Salem's four hits, two were doubles against the Hillcats. Linares tossed six scoreless then gave way to the partnership of Luis Valdez and Matt Swanson. They allowed a pair of baserunners but did not cede a run.

In the game, Billy Hart went 1-for-3 to up his average to .308 while Mitch Einertson's 0-for-3 pushed him down to .307 with one game to play. The two Salem hitters own the top spots in the Carolina League in batting. Matt Rogelstad of Potomac is third at .303.

Monday at noon, a batting champion could be crowned in Salem as the Avalanche hosts the Hillcats in the regular season finale. Salem's Casey Hudspeth faces Lynchburg righty Todd Redmond.
