Pelicans Drop Low-Scoring Game to Salem 4-1
May 27, 2021 - Carolina League (CarL)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Both teams were only able to collect seven hits apiece as the Pelicans dropped the third game of the series 4-1 to Salem on Thursday night. With the loss, Myrtle Beach falls back under the .500 mark at 10-11, while the Red Sox move back up to 12-9.
After knocking 25 base hits in the first two games of the series, the Pelicans' offense struggled to get going as only one run came across the plate. Pablo Aliendo (3-4) posted his first three-hit game of the season and second of his career while Edmond Americaan (1-4, 3B, R) extended his hitting streak to six games with his second triple of the season. Yohendrick Pinango (0-4) saw his seven-game hitting streak come to an end after four ground-outs.
Manuel Espinoza (1-2) got the start and threw a season-high 5.1 innings en route to his second loss of the year after allowing all four earned runs on six hits. The right-hander also struck out four while walking two.
It was a big night at the plate Salem DH Joe Davis (2-4, HR, 2 RBI) who homered for the second time this season while collecting a pair of RBIs. Matthew Lugo (2-4, RBI, R) recorded the other multi-hit game for the Red Sox.
Robert Kwiatkowski (2-0) earned the win with three scoreless innings in relief, while Ryan Fernandez picked up his first save of the season.
The Pelicans were held quiet through the opening frame for the first time in three games but still managed to score first against the former Carolina League foe. Americaan lined a ball to left-center field with two outs in the top of the third that he stretched into a triple, his second in as many games. Bautista hit him in with a single to right-center to put the Birds up 1-0.
In the bottom half of the third, Salem decided the game with three runs coming home to score against Espinoza. Alex Erro led off the inning with a single with Ceddanne Rafaela following suit. Lugo made it three straight hits with a single that brought home Erro to even the score at one. Rafaela would move to third and later be hit home with an RBI groundout from Stephen Scott. Lugo came home as the third run on another RBI groundout from Davis to make the score 3-1 after three innings.
The Pelicans were held scoreless through the rest of the game while the Red Sox added one more insurance run with a solo home run coming from Davis in the sixth inning to make the score 4-1.
Salem and Myrtle Beach will continue their series tomorrow with the fourth game starting at 7:05 p.m.
