Pelicans Drop Fifth Game to RiverDogs 7-3

June 19, 2021 - Carolina League (CarL)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

The Charleston RiverDogs continued their domination with their seventh straight win and fifth consecutive victory over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Saturday night. The Birds have now fallen in their last six games and have slipped to a 17-23 record. The RiverDogs have taken the first five games of the series and will go for the series sweep tomorrow. Their record moves up to 26-13 with the win.

Tonight's game was the first nine-inning game played on a Saturday as Pelicans Ballpark had previously hosted doubleheaders in the Saturday games against the Augusta GreenJackets and Columbia Fireflies. Over 5,200 fans were in attendance as the home crowd played a factor all night.

It was another quiet night for the Birds' bats with only five hits and three runs to show for it. Jacob Wetzel (2-4, HR, 2 R) provided the spark for the Pelicans' offense with his second home run of the season. Ethan Hearn (1-4, RBI) also brought home a late run in the game with an RBI single.

Richard Gallardo (1-3) started the game and took the loss for Myrtle Beach as he went four innings and allowed four runs, three earned off six hits. Bailey Reid threw just under two innings and allowed three more runs to cross the plate while walking four.

The RiverDogs used their power to take the lead and later break open the game. Abiezel Ramirez (2-2, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R) hit a three-run homer in the seventh that extended the Charleston lead to six runs. Brett Wisely (1-5, HR) smacked an opposite-field homer to give the RiverDogs a one-run lead in the third.

Hector Figueroa (1-2) picked up his first win of the season with 2.1 innings pitched in relief with just one hit allowed and three strikeouts. Matthew Peguero kicked things off for Charleston in his first start of the season and struck out four through 2.2 innings with the home run allowed to Wetzel.

Charleston grabbed the lead in the first inning when Nick Schnell led off the game with a first-pitch single to right field. Curtis Mead followed by grounding back to the pitcher where Gallardo threw it to second for the force out. Pelicans' shortstop Fabian Pertuz then threw it to first to attempt the double play, but the throw went wild and allowed Mead to get to second. Diego Infante came up two batters later and hit Mead home with a single to give Charleston an early 1-0 lead.

The Pelicans scored their first run in over 23 innings with Wetzel lifting a home run over the fence in right field in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at one. It was his second homer of the season, both hit at Pelicans Ballpark.

Wisely responded for the RiverDogs in the top of the third by taking an 0-1 pitch opposite field to right and into the bleachers for a solo homer. Charles went up 2-1 and would not lose the lead after that.

Two more runs were added by the RiverDogs in the top of the fourth with Michael Berglund being hit by a pitch to start off the inning. Ramirez dribbled a ball to right field as the next batter and put runners at the corners with no outs. After the next two batters were retired and Ramirez moved over to second on a groundout, Mead lined a ball up the middle to bring home two runs and make it a 4-1 ball game. The RBIs are the 9th and 10th for Mead in five games this series.

Both teams were scoreless until the seventh inning broke things open for Charleston. Reid stayed in the game for his second inning of work after walking the bases loaded the inning prior but not giving up a run. After he got the first batter to fly out, Alexander Ovalles drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch. Osleivis Basabe followed with a single to put two runners on. After the next batter was retired, Reid gave up a three-run home run to Ramirez to right field to make the score 7-1 in favor of the visitors.

The Birds put together a late rally in the final frame, but it was too little too late. Matt Mervis drew a one-out walk, and Wetzel singled for his second hit of the ballgame. Luis Verdugo grounded a ball to short and came inches from beating the throw to first, but both runners advanced to second and third with two outs. RiverDogs' reliever Angel Felipe threw a wild pitch that scored Mervis for the first Pelicans' run since the second inning. With Wetzel now on third, Jordan Nwogu worked a walk to put runners at the corners. Hearn came up and floated the first pitch to shallow right-center field for an RBI single and the lead was cut to 7-3. Pertuz hit a ground ball to third that Mead threw to second for the force out and the game was over.

Myrtle Beach will try and avoid the sweep with game six tomorrow night against the RiverDogs at 6:05 p.m.
