ZEBULON, NC - The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (15-24) tied Friday's game on two separate occasions, captured a lead, but ultimately lost it in the eighth, falling to the Carolina Mudcats (24-15) 5-4 at Five County Stadium. A go-ahead two-run double from Zach Daniels put Fayetteville in command of the game late before Daniel Castillo won it for Carolina with a three-run swing.

Tied 2-2 in the top of the seventh, Kent Hasler loaded the bases and was lifted from the game for Cam Robinson (W,1-0). Daniels proceeded to rope a two-run double into right center field, pushing Fayetteville ahead for the first time 4-2. On the play, Luke Berryhill attempted to score from first but was thrown out at the plate.

Luis Vega (L,1-2) retired the side in order in the seventh, but loaded the bases in the eighth. Ernesto Jaquez inherited the jam behind Vega and surrendered a bases clearing single to Castillo high off the left field wall, vaulting the Mudcats back ahead 5-4.

Nerio Rodriguez singled in the ninth to put the tying run on, Berryhill then walked, but Roinson recovered with consecutive strikeouts of Daniels and Yeuris Ramirez to close the game.

Earlier in the evening, Fayetteville came from behind on two separate occasions. Shay Whitcomb hit his team-leading sixth home run in the fifth to tie the game at 1-1, and Kenedy Corona evened things at 2-2 with an RBI single in the sixth.

On the mound, Brayan De Paula struck out four over 4.1 innings and Carolina starter Brendan Murphy pitched five complete frames in a no decision. Freylin Garcia also contributed 1.2 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts out of the Fayetteville bullpen.

The series continues on Saturday night with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m at Five County Stadium. Carolina is scheduled to start RHP Nick Belzer (2-1, 4.41) and Fayetteville's starting pitcher is still to be announced.
