Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds jumped ahead early and held fast to secure a 4-2 win over the Salem Red Sox on Saturday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The win means the Shorebirds (25-14) move four games ahead of the Red Sox (22-19) and have a shot to split the series on Sunday afternoon.
Salem wasted no time getting the scoring started, opening the game with three consecutive base hits. Ceddanne Rafaela and Gilberto Jimenez both singled to start the first inning and Matthew Lugo drove in Rafaela on a knock to center. Jaxx Groshans followed up a Stephen Scott groundout with a sacrifice fly to score Jimenez.
The 'Birds struck back immediately, evening the score by the end of the first inning. Hudson Haskin slapped a single on the first pitch he saw to open the frame and Dylan Harris then smacked a homer to left, his first of the year, to drive Haskin in and tie the game at 2-2.
Delmarva played longball again in the bottom half of the second. Cristopher Cespedes got things started with a leadoff base knock and Trevor Kehe followed by sending a two-run shot over the fence in left, his second of the year, to give the home team a 4-2 lead.
From there, both pitching staffs took command of the game. The 'Birds shut the Sox out for the final eight innings, while Salem kept Delmarva off the board over the final six. The Red Sox struck out ten batters while the Shorebirds sat down eleven.
Shane Davis (3-1) earned the second victory for a Shorebirds starting pitcher this season. He worked 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits, tallying five punchouts.
Jordan DiValerio (6-2) was handed the loss as Salem's starter after working four innings. He surrendered four runs on five hits and fanned five.
Shelton Perkins earned his fourth save of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth, allowing just a walk while striking out one batter.
Ryan Watson earned the hold in style, pitching three hitless innings and striking out four, walking just one.
The Shorebirds go for the split on Sunday, June 20 at Perdue Stadium. Noah Denoyer (3-1, 3.80) is scheduled to open the action for Delmarva, while Jeremy Wu-Yelland (0-2, 4.18) is in line for his second start of the series for Salem. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 1:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and Fox Sports 960 AM with Sam Jellinek on the call.
