Pelicans Close Series with 2-0 Win over Wood Ducks

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans grabbed their second shutout win of the week and eighth of the season in a 2-0 win over the Down East Wood Ducks on Sunday afternoon. Their second win of the week moved the Birds to a 57-44 record and 18-18 in the second half. Down East dropped to 55-42 and 18-18 in the second half with the loss.

Three Myrtle Beach pitchers held the Wood Ducks scoreless as Starlyn Pichardo (4-1) stood out and got the win with five strikeouts across three innings in relief and just two hits allowed to no walks. Yovanny Cabrera earned the save by silencing Down East in the final two innings. Starter Marino Santy continued his scoreless streak with four innings and two strikeouts while sacrificing four hits and walking one.

With the bases loaded in the top of the second, Pedro Ramirez (0-3, RBI) hit into a double play that scored the first run of the game. Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth for the other run. Parker Chavers (2-4) hit two singles and came around to score both runs in the victory.

Down East used just two pitchers with starter Brayan Mendoza (1-2) taking the loss with one earned run across his five innings of work and six hits allowed. Bryan Chi allowed the second run and pitched the final four innings with just one hit allowed.

Despite being shut out, Tommy Specht (3-4) smashed three singles to lead the Down East lineup. The Wood Ducks outhit the Pelicans 8-7 but left eight on base and went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

The Pelicans return home for a six-game set with the Fayetteville Woodpeckers beginning on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
