Losing Skid Continues, Pelicans Lose 3-2 to Wood Ducks

For the seventh time in their last eight games, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans fell 3-2 to the Down East Wood Ducks on Saturday night. The loss puts the Birds under .500 in the second half at 17-18 and 56-44 overall. Down East improved to 18-17 in the second half and 55-41 overall.

Both teams collected five hits with the Pelicans plating just two runs. The only RBI came from Ismael Mena (2-4, 2B, RBI) on an RBI double in the top of the fifth. Miguel Pabon (2-4, 2B) also posted a multi-hit game with a double.

Reliever Kevin Valdez (2-1) took the loss by allowing one earned run in his three innings out of the bullpen. Starter Drew Gray sacrificed a run in the second and third innings while striking out five batters.

Anthony Gutierrez (2-3, RBI) was the only Wood Duck with a multi-hit game as he drove in one on a single in the bottom of the second. The only other RBI came from Tommy Specht on a go-ahead double in the bottom of the fifth.

Damian Mendoza (5-4) tossed 2 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball in relief to take the win while giving up just one hit and one walk and striking out four. Adrian Rodriguez took the save with three strikeouts and one hit allowed across the final two innings.

The series concludes on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
