Pelicans Can't Match Explosive Dash

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Three home runs helped the Winston-Salem Dash take down the Pelicans 15-3 at Wake Forest Baseball Park in Winston-Salem, NC Tuesday night.

For the fourth time in five games on the current road trip the Pelicans plated runs in the first. Cole Miles and C.J. Lee both singled to open the game and advanced a base on a wild pitch before groundouts by Freddie Freeman and Donell Linares drove them each in the give the Birds a 2-0 lead. The RBI by Linares gives him at least one RBI in his last 12 games.

Dash starter Johnnie Lowe went on to retire 16 of the next 17 batter he faced after the back-to-back singles to open the game while his offense put up 10 runs behind him over that stretch.

In the bottom of the first, Greg Paiml doubled, and was singled home by Brent Morel three batters later. The Dash then added four runs in the bottom of the second including a two-run single by Kyle Shelton and a two-run double by Jimmy Gallagher. Shelton struck again driving in two more runs with a double as part of a five-run third inning. Gallagher contributed with a two-run home run which finished the day for Pelican starter Cole Rohrbough. Rohrbough (2-3) took the loss having allowed 10 runs over two and two-thirds innings on 11 hits.

The Pelicans got a run back in the top of the sixth when Freeman singled home Lee but the Dash came right back with three more runs in the bottom of the inning. Lee Cruz homered to begin the inning and Salvador Sanchez hit one of his two two-run blasts to make it 13-3. Sanchez struck again in the eighth with his second two-run shot of the game to cap the score at 15-3.

The game saw an unusual twist in the bottom of the seventh inning when homeplate umpire Andy Dudones was hit in the hand by a pitch from Eric Barrett resulting him Dudones leaving the game. Left with one umpire, Will Little moved from the bases to behind the plate while players from each team, Robert Marcial from the Pelicans and Christian Marrero of the Dash, were asked to fill in as the field umpires while their respective teams were in the field.

Lowe (4-1) took the win for the Dash allowing all three runs over eight innings on only five while striking out five. The win assures the Dash a series victory as the Pelicans look to salvage the series finale Wednesday night. Linares singled in the ninth to extend his hit streak to 10 games, the longest of any Pelican during the 2009 season.

The Pelicans will send lefty Edgar Osuna to the mound opposite right hander Daniel Hudson of Winston-Salem. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 at Wake Forest Baseball Park in Winston-Salem, NC.
