Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Winston-Salem, NC - It was a potpourri of oddities at Wake Forest Baseball Park on Tuesday night where Winston-Salem throttled Myrtle Beach 15-3 to match their season-high with four consecutive wins. The Dash offense registered 17 hits and season-highs with 7 doubles and 4 home runs in game that saw each team forced to provide a field umpire.
The rare event occurred in the bottom of the seventh inning when home plate umpire Andy Dudones took a foul ball off his right hand. Dudones exited the game and was taken to the hospital to seek additional treatment. Will Little, the field umpire, moved behind the plate while each team provided a field umpire for the remainder of the game. Robert Marcial served the role for Myrtle Beach, while Christian Marrero took on the umpiring responsibilities for Winston-Salem.
The Pelicans offense came alive early as Cole Miles and CJ Lee hit consecutive single of Johnnie Lowe to open the game. After a wild pitch advanced the runners, Freddie Freeman and Donell Linares hit back-to-back RBI ground outs to put Myrtle Beach in front 2-0. The Dash cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the first when shortstop Greg Paiml doubled with one out and scored on a two-out single by third baseman Brent Morel.
The Dash jumped in front with four runs in the bottom of the second inning against Myrtle Beach starter Cole Rohrbough. Center fielder Salvador Sanchez, who finished with a season-high four hits and four runs, led off with a single and moved to third base when right fielder Joe Persichina doubled. Designated hitter Kyle Shelton followed with a two-run single to give the Dash a 3-2 lead. Next, Second baseman Dale Mollenhauer walked and Paiml bunted the runners up to second and third. First baseman Jimmy Gallagher lined a two-run double into the right field corner to extend Winston-Salem's advantage to 5-2.
The Dash broke the game open in the third inning with five more runs off Rohrbough. Shelton, who finished with a season-high four RBI, delivered a two-run double that scored Sanchez and Persichina. Mollenhauer contributed a run-scoring double and Gallagher crushed a two-run home run to put Winston-Salem ahead 10-2.
Freddie Freeman tallied an RBI single for the Pelicans in the top of the sixth inning, but the Dash answered right back in the bottom half as left fielder Lee Cruz smacked a solo home run and Sanchez added a two-run blast to give the Dash a 13-3 lead. Sanchez would finalize the scoring in the bottom of the eighth inning with his second round-tripper of the night, a two-run shot off Pelicans reliever Tommy Palica.
Lost in all of the offense, was a solid outing from Lowe (4-1) who matched a season-high by tossing eight innings and holding Myrtle Beach to three runs on five hits with five strikeouts to garner the win.
Rohrbough (2-3) only last 2.2 innings and allowed a career-worst 10 runs on 11 hits to suffer the loss.
The Dash and Pelicans will conclude their three-game series on Wednesday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Winston-Salem will send RHP Daniel Hudson (2-2, 4.50) to the mound, while Myrtle Beach is expected to start LHP Edgar Osuna (3-4, 3.19). The first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
