Pelicans Alumnus Bote Debuts in Majors

April 22, 2018 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Former Myrtle Beach Pelicans infielder David Bote made his major league debut Saturday for the Chicago Cubs at Coors Field in Denver. Bote is the third Myrtle Beach alumnus to make his MLB debut this season and the 172nd player, including rehabbers, to have spent time in both the Grand Strand and the big leagues.

Bote was born in Longmont, Colo., about a 45-minute drive outside of Denver, on April 7, 1993, just two days after the first-ever game in Colorado Rockies history. Facing the Rockies in Saturday's contest, Bote doubled in his first at-bat and finished 1-for-3 as Chicago's third baseman in a 5-2 loss.

Originally drafted by the Cubs in the 18th round of the 2012 draft out of Neosho County Community College (Kan.), Bote had never played in more 98 games in any professional season before coming to Myrtle Beach to start the 2016 campaign. After beginning the year in a part-time role and shuttling to Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa for brief stints with the Smokies and I-Cubs, respectively, Bote became a starter for the Birds in late June. Finally in an everyday role for one of the first times in his career, Bote took off, batting .337/.410/.518 with 26 doubles, three triples, six home runs and 41 RBIs in 72 games. ?

After leading all Cubs farmhands in August of 2016 in batting average (.367) and runs scored (15), with his 15 extra-base hits tying for the organizational lead, Bote was named the Chicago Cubs' Minor League Player of the Month. In the postseason for Myrtle Beach, Bote was 15-for-26 at the plate with nine RBIs in seven games, slashing .577/.677/.769 to help the Pelicans win the Mills Cup Championship and earn the Carolina League's Most Valuable Player award for the playoffs.

Following his breakout season in Myrtle Beach, Bote played in 127 games with Tennessee in 2017, batting .272/.353/.438 with 30 doubles, three triples, 14 homers and 59 RBIs. He had bopped three home runs in just 12 games to start the 2018 campaign with Iowa before receiving his promotion to the Cubs.

Former Myrtle Beach farmhands Billy McKinney (New York Yankees, March 30) and Pedro Araujo (Baltimore Orioles, March 31) have also made their MLB debuts this season.

The 2018 season will be the 20th season for the Pelicans franchise and fourth as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For tickets visit MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/tickets, call (843) 918-6000, or visit the Pelicans Box Office.
