Salem Red Sox News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Salem Red Sox came from behind twice Sunday afternoon, with homers from Bobby Dalbec and Jerry Downs helping to lift the team to a 6-4, 10-inning victory over the Winston-Salem Dash at BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem.
The Sox (10-8) plated three runs in the top of the 10th frame and held on to secure a series split. Winston-Salem (10-8) had a chance to hand Salem a second straight walk-off loss, bringing the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the 10th, but failed to convert.
The Dash opened the scoring in the bottom of the first against Salem starter Jake Thompson (ND), who gave up a leadoff single to Joel Booker before Booker swiped second. Alex Call singled to center and advanced to second on the throw to home by center fielder Trenton Kemp. Blake Rutherford bounced out to Downs at first, allowing Booker to score and moving Call to third base. With two outs, Gavin Sheets singled past Dalbec's dive on the left side, bringing in Call to give Winston-Salem a 2-0 lead.
Salem answered in the top of the fourth against Dash starter Bernardo Flores (ND). The Sox got runners on the corners with nobody out on the strength of singles by Santiago Espinal and Brett Netzer. Dalbec battered a double off the wall in center, allowing both Espinal and Netzer to score and tie the game at 2-2.
The Dash edged back ahead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mitch Roman picked up a one-out single, and scooted to third on a single by Booker, who reached second when Kemp failed to handle the ball well in center. Thompson walked Call, loading the bases, and Rutherford lofted a sacrifice fly to right to score Roman and put the Dash back in front 3-2.
That lead was short-lived, however. New reliever Zach Thompson (BS, 2) struck out Dalbec to start the frame, but Downs smashed an opposite-field homer to left with one away. It was Downs' second blast of the season and the series, and it tied the game back up at 3-3.
The teams went to extra frames after neither could score in the remainder of regulation, and Salem surged ahead in the top of the 10th against Dash reliever Matt Foster (L, 0-1). With Kemp on second base to start the inning, Tovar dropped a sacrifice bunt to advance Kemp to third base. The Dash elected to intentionally walk Espinal to set up the double play, but Netzer hit a deep fly to right that Call only barely caught. Kemp trotted home on the sacrifice fly. Dalbec then made his presence felt once more, smashing a two-run blast to right field to run the Salem lead to 6-3.
The Dash threatened another comeback in the bottom of the 10th against Salem reliever Hunter Smith (W, 2-0). With Nate North starting the inning on second, Roman singled him to third before Booker singled to plate North and put Roman at second. Call tried to drop a sacrifice bunt, but popped it up, and Dalbec sprinted in to make a terrific sliding catch for the first out. Rutherford bounced to short, allowing the Sox to retire Booker at second while Roman made it to third with two outs. Salem manager Joe Oliver called in Matthew Gorst (S, 1), who only needed one pitch to get Micker Adolfo to bounce into the game-ending fielder's choice to secure the win.
Jake Thompson surrendered three runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings while fanning four. Algenis Martinez was sharp over three shutout innings, allowing just two hits and recording four strikeouts. Smith gave up an unearned run on two hits and a walk in 1.2 frames. Gorst threw one pitch to get one out and earn the save.
The Sox will have a day off Monday before returning to action at Haley Toyota Field Tuesday night as they open a three-game series against the Frederick Keys. Southpaw Darwinzon Hernandez is scheduled to start for Salem against Keys lefty Alex Wells. First pitch from Haley Toyota Field is at 7:05 p.m., and the pregame show with Ben Gellman and Suzie Cool begins at 6:45 p.m. on the Red Sox broadcast network.
