Lancaster Stormers News Release
Jaime Pedroza spearheaded a pair of four-run innings as the Lancaster Barnstormers rallied from a 5-0 deficit to down the Somerset Patriots, 9-7, in the second game of a doubleheader Thursday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium to complete a four-game sweep of the visiting Pats.
The Barnstormers captured the opener, 5-4, on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning.
With the sweep, Lancaster has opened a 3 1/2 game lead over both Somerset and Sugar Land in the Freedom Division. Sugar Land pays the Barnstormers a visit for a three-game weekend series beginning Friday night.
In the nightcap, Lancaster fell behind, 5-0, as the Patriots piled up seven singles in 2 2/3 innings off starter Mark Brackman, the biggest a two-run drive to right by Jonny Tucker in the second.
Lancaster began to recover on Terry Tiffee's two-out RBI single in the third, but it was the next two innings that put the Barnstormers over the top.
Pedroza lofted a two-run homer into the screen in right center in the fourth to cut the Somerset lead to 5-3. Lancaster would load the bases after that, and one run scored on a wild pitch with Tommy Everidge at the plate. Everidge walked to refill first, but reliever Mike Solbach struck out Tiffee for the second out. Jesus Merchan chopped a grounder over Solbach's head. A play was made behind second base, but Merchan dove across first, beating the throw as the tying run scored.
Blake Gailen started the sixth with a single to right off Anthony Claggett (0-2) and moved to third as Pedroza yanked a double into the right field corner. Francisco Hernandez gave the Barnstormers a lead with a sacrifice fly to center. Pedroza scored on Adam Godwin's single to right center. Fehlandt Lentini doubled home the third run of the inning, and Tiffee made it 9-5 with a long double to center.
Freddie Bynum cut the lead in half with a two-run double to left in the top of the sixth, but Dwayne Pollok was summoned and picked up the final two outs there. Jeff Bennett allowed a single and walk in the seventh before coaxing a game-ending double play out of Adam Donachie.
Les Walrond (3-0) picked up the win with 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
In the opener, Emerson Frostad led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk off Justin Cassel (1-4) in a 4-4 tie. Godwin was hit by a pitch, and Lentini ran for Frostad. Blake Gailen moved the runners ahead with a sacrifice. Lefty Chase Wright walked Everidge intentionally, but the strategy was foiled when a pitch to Tiffee bounced away from Yusuf Carter, allowing Lentini to scamper home with the winning tally.
Ryan Harvey provided the Barnstormers earlier offense with a two-run homer and RBI double, and Lancaster carried a 4-2 lead behind Alan Johnson into the seventh. Tim Hamulack was ushered in, but the left-hander allowed a leadoff walk to Dan DeGeorge. Hamulack got two outs before having to endure a defensive letdown. Jesse Hoorelbeke's smash to third was flagged by Merchan's dive, but his low throw skipped out of Tiffee's glove. Freddy Sandoval hit a soft liner to second that knuckled on Brad Boyer, who dropped it for an error to load the bases. Jeff Nettles, on an 0-2 pitch lined a two-run single to left center, tying the game.
Jason Urquidez (1-0) got the final out of the inning to earn the win.
The Barnstormers host the Sugar Land Skeeters on Friday evening at 7:00. Derrick Gordon (1-1) will take the mound against John Halama (3-2). The game will be aired on 1390-AM, WLAN and on 1600-AM, WPDC beginning at 6:45. Barnstormers broadcasts may also be heard on 1390wlan.com and on the I Heart Radio cell phone app.
