Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., August 19, 2005) - The Long Island Ducks, members of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, today announced the signing of pitcher Pedro Borbon, Jr. The signing of the former Brave brings the total number of players on the Ducks with major league experience roster to 10.
"Pedro is a great addition to our bullpen," says pitching coach Jeff Scott. "He has been playing at the Triple-A level in the Angels system and we feel that he can bring the success he had in Salt Lake to the Ducks."
The 37-year old began the 2005 season with the Double and Triple-A affiliates of the Angels. In six appearances for Arkansas of the Texas League, he held opposing batters to a stifling .083 batting average and did not allow a single run scored. In eight games in with the Salt Lake Stingers (AAA), he struck out four batters in 5.1 innings of work.
Borbon was a member of the Ducks in 2003 when he posted a 5-2 record with a 2.08 ERA in 69.1 innings pitched. He also started one game for Long Island in 2004. He is one of three players in Ducks history to make it back to the majors after playing in a Long Island uniform (2003), joined by Carlos Baerga (2002) and Bill Pulsipher (2004).
Borbon pitched one inning of the 1995 World Series as a member of the Braves and picked up a save, retiring the Indians in order. The 17-year veteran owns a career 16-16 record at the major league level with a 4.68 ERA with the Braves, Dodgers, Blue Jays and Cardinals. He originally signed by the White Sox as an undrafted free agent in 1988.
The Long Island Ducks, 2004 Atlantic League champions, play their home games at Citibank Park and are in their sixth season of play in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. They have filled their ballpark to over 100 percent capacity in each of their first five seasons and are one of the most successful minor league franchises in the country.
