Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
Bridgeport, Conn. - The Bridgeport Bluefish held on to beat the Newark Bears, 7-6, Friday afternoon in front of 4,006 fans at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
The Bluefish struck early in the bottom of the first as Gary Burnham hit a single up the middle to score Chris Latham and D.J. Boston. Burnham was out on the play attempting to take second base on the throw home.
The Bears took the lead on a Norm Hutchins homerun onto the train tracks over the right field wall that scored Jose Olmeda and Jack Santora. The homerun marked the 1,000th franchise homerun by the Bears in their eight year history.
Bridgeport rallied with a five run inning in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead in style. Will Pennyfeather hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Jamie Gann to start the scoring. Hector Kuilan hit his tenth homerun of the season to score Burnham from third base. Tony Rodriguez followed with a single to right field and came home on a triple by Chris Latham to right field. After a Newark pitching change, D.J. Boston hit an RBI single to right field to score Latham.
Prior to tonight's game the Bluefish had scored five runs in an inning twice, but never at home. Both occurrences happened in Somerset in the ninth inning on May 16th and July 5th.
Newark made a late attempt to take the lead in the top of ninth with a three run rally that was cut short by a controversial call by first base umpire Sean Schofield, to call out Wil Quintana at the plate. Quintana had dodged the pitch, when home plate umpire, Kurt Branin, motioned that he had been hit. Bluefish catcher, Hector Kuilan appealed the call to Schofield, who overruled Branin's original call for the third out of the inning.
Bridgeport starter Josh Miller went eight innings, allowing five earned runs on eleven hits while striking out four and walking one. Robert Person came into the game in relief of Miller in the ninth to earn his first save of the season. Newark starter Carlos Castillo pitched 5.1 innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out three.
The Bluefish and Bears meet again on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. for the middle game of the three game series. It's Disco Night at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard, anyone born in or graduated in the 1970's will receive $2 off the price of their ticket, or dress in the garb of the decade to also receive $2 off.
