Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

(Syracuse, NY) - Pawtucket newcomer Deven Marrero drilled a game-winning, two-out RBI double in the top of the tenth inning and starter Steven Wright pitched eight strong innings as the PawSox topped the Syracuse Chiefs, 3-2 in ten innings, Friday night before a sellout crowd of 12,045 fans at NBT Bank Stadium in the opener of a two-game series.

Will Middlebrooks, continuing a Major League injury rehab assignment, played the first five innings at third base and went 1-for-2 with a walk. Middlebrooks is now 3-for-8 with two walks and a home run in four games since resuming his rehab stint earlier in the week.

Marrero's double came against Chiefs reliever Warner Madrigal (0-2) in the tenth, a deep drive that hit the base of the right field fence on the fly. It scored Garin Cecchini from first base, who had singled with two outs in the inning to begin the game-winning rally.

Pawtucket (46-44) began its season-long ten-game road trip with a come-from-behind victory and snapped a three-game losing skid in the process. Wright gave up a pair of runs in the third to put Syracuse ahead 2-0, but the knuckleballer settled down and allowed only two hits the rest of his night.

Alex Wilson (2-1) sent the game into extra innings by pitching a perfect bottom of the ninth, then worked around a leadoff single in the tenth to finish his own victory. With a runner at first with none out, Marrero caught a hard line drive off the bat of Destin Hood and doubled off Jhonatan Solano to squelch the Chiefs rally.

Pawtucket tied the game against Syracuse starter A.J. Cole with a pair of runs in the fifth. Travis Shaw's sacrifice fly plated the PawSox first run of the game, then Carlos Rivero followed with a game-tying, two-out RBI single to knot the score at 2. Neither side could plate a run for the remainder of regulation.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday night with first pitch at 7:00 pm. All-Star right-hander Anthony Ranaudo (9-4, 2.35) is slated to start for the PawSox against Syracuse righty Blake Treinen (4-0, 1.80). Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:45 pm.

Following the ten-game road trip and the subsequent Triple-A All-Star break, the PawSox return to McCoy Stadium for a four game series against Buffalo that begins on Thursday, July 17th. Good seats are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
