Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell in 10 innings to the Pawtucket Red Sox on Friday night, 3-2, from NBT Bank Stadium. Shortstop Deven Marrero's 10th-inning double plated Garin Cecchini, sending the Chiefs to a loss in their fifth extra-inning game out of their last six contests.
Syracuse (51-36) struck first in the third inning. Destin Hood led off with a double to left field. Hood then advanced to third on a Brandon Laird groundout. With one out, Josh Johnson singled to left field, and Hood scored to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead. Jeff Kobernus followed by grounding a full-count pitch on one hop over the glove of second baseman Ryan Roberts. Johnson, who was running on the play, raced home all the way from first base, and Syracuse took a 2-0 advantage.
Pawtucket (46-44) tied the game in the fifth inning off of Syracuse right-hander A.J. Cole. Alex Hassan and Andres Torres began the inning with singles to put runners on first and second. With one out, Will Middlebrooks walked to load the bases. A Travis Shaw sacrifice fly scored Hassan to cut the Chiefs lead to one, 2-1. With Torres on second and Middlebrooks on first, Carlos Rivero singled up the middle to score Torres and tie the game at two.
The game stayed at 2-2 until the 10th inning, when Pawtucket plated the winning run off Chiefs reliever Warner Madrigal. Cecchini started the two-out rally with a single to left field. That brought up Marrero, who smashed a double to the wall in right-center field, scoring Cecchini for the eventual winning run.
Syracuse and Pawtucket finish a two-game series on Saturday night. Right-hander Blake Treinen will take the mound for the Chiefs against Pawtucket right-hander Anthony Ranaudo. First pitch is set for 7:00.
