Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
BACK ON TRACK: Strong pitching and a timely hit carried the RailRiders to a 4-1 win over the Bisons in last night's series finale. Starter Chris Leroux allowed one unearned run over six innings and retired 16 of the last 18 he faced. SWB relievers Francisco Rondon (3-0) and Diego Moreno (2) combined on three scoreless innings down the stretch for the win and save respectively. The win snapped a four-game slide for the RailRiders who went 1-2 on their short two-day road trip.
TRY ME ON FOR SIZE: Scott Sizemore's error gave Buffalo an unearned 1-0 lead last night. He more than made amends for his miscue in the eighth. Against All-Star closer Bobby Korecky, with two on and two out in a 1-1 tie, he connected on a first-pitch swing for a double over shortstop that scored two. Those runs went on the line of former RailRider Mike Zagurski (3-1) who took the loss. Sizemore has hit safely in seven straight games. Over his last 22 contests, he has gone 24-for-83 with half of his hits (12) going for extra bases (6-2B, 3-3B, 3HR) and 17 RBIs. That makes for a .289 batting average and a .542 slugging percentage.
WHEELS UP: Earlier in the day, the New York Yankees promoted Zelous Wheeler to the big leagues. In his second at-bat, he took former SWB/New York Yankee Phil Hughes' 3-1 pitch out of the park for a home run.
YO ADRIAN?: Another pre-game move had Adonis Garcia activated off the DL. In his first game since June 9 he went 1-for-5 with two strikeouts and bounced into a double play as the clean-up hitter.
HE'S BACK: Carmen Angelini also returned to the roster, but from Double-A Trenton. He started at shortstop and went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
HE'S ON FIRE: Tuesday, Jose Pirela was named the IL's June Player of the Month. Wednesday, he was named an IL All-Star and the loop's starting second baseman. Thanks to a pair of three-hit efforts on the recent road trip, he entered today as the IL's lone player to reach the century mark in hits (104). He also ranks among the IL's best in batting average (3rd, .322), runs scored (2nd, 54) and total bases (3rd, 146). Oddly enough, while he's the IL's starting second baseman, he played the position for the first time since June 4 in Wednesday's nightcap. After the bevy of roster moves in recent days, Pirela is now the only player that has been on the RailRiders' active roster every day since Opening Day.
JUST-US LEAGUE: The RailRiders are tied with Rochester for the league lead in batting average (.270)...Only Charlotte (.410) has a better slugging percentage than SWB (.404)...However, SWB has the IL's second-lowest walk total (265, 3/game) and just a .335 OBP...Buffalo ranks ninth with its .258 contact clip and third-worst in slugging (.382)...Buffalo stands sixth in the league with its 3.58 ERA while SWB sits 11th at 4.31...The RailRiders own the IL's third-worst fielding percentage (.976) while the Bisons boast its best rate (.983).
OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders have had 56 different players see game action this season (21 position players, 35 pitchers)...Since returning from the DL, Chris Leroux has allowed just one unearned run over 11 innings (0.82 ERA) and two starts...The team has won both games...In nine games and 15.1 innings, Francisco Rondon has allowed just one run (0.59 ERA) and has struck out 16 men...The RailRiders left the bases loaded twice (third and ninth innings)...They stranded 10 men on base and went 2-for-12 (.167) with runners in scoring position...Bobby Korecky had inherited 11 runners on the season and had only allowed one of them to score before coughing up both of Mike Zagurski's hand-me-down men on Thursday...The paid crowd of 16,505 was the largest to see a RailRiders game this season...Francisco Arcia was charged with two passed balls giving the RailRiders a league-high total of 16 on the year.
