G-Braves Slip Past Bulls, 3-2

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - In front of a Coolray Field crowd of 10,145, the Gwinnett Braves (41-47) pushed across a late run to snap their four-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over the Durham Bulls (48-42). Todd Cunningham went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and made a game-saving diving catch to lead the victory.

With the sixth largest crowd in franchise history in attendance, the G-Braves got off to a rough start. The Bulls took advantage of three errors - two by starting pitcher Aaron Northcraft - in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Gwinnett tied the game in the bottom of the first on back-to-back doubles by Cunningham and Phil Gosselin. Cunningham led the game off with a double to right off Bulls starter Mike Montgomery, while Gosselin drove him in with a ground rule double, knotting it up at 1-1.

Cunningham and Gosselin were back at in the third inning, as Cunningham tripled and scored on Gosselin's sacrifice fly to give the G-Braves a 2-1 lead.

Durham answered with a run in the fifth inning. Hak-Ju Lee singled off Northcraft, moved to second on a walk and scored on an RBI single by Mike Fontenot, squaring the game at 2-2.

It would be the only earned run that Northcraft would serve up, as the right-hander had a strong outing. He went 6.0 innings, scattering five hits, allowing two runs, one earned with four strikeouts. He did not factor into the decision, exiting in a 2-2 game.

Gwinnett scored the decisive run in the seventh inning. Ozzie Martinez walked and moved to second on a bunt by Steve Lerud. Cunningham singled putting runners on first and second with one out. Gosselin hit into a potential inning-ending double play, but the shortstop Lee threw the ball away, allowing Martinez to score from third.

Terry Doyle (W, 1-1) was the beneficiary of the late run, recording his first win with the G-Braves. He worked 1.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Atahaulpa Severino (H, 8) worked 0.2 scoreless innings, while Juan Jaime tallied his 14th save with a scoreless ninth. Jaime issued a pair of two-out walks in the ninth inning, but Cunningham made a diving catch to rob Justin Christian of a game-tying hit.

Brandon Gomes (L, 0-2) took the loss, allowing the unearned run to cross in the seventh. He pitched 1.2 innings, scattering three hits and walking one. Gomes pitched in relief of Montgomery, who pitched 5.0 innings of two run baseball. The southpaw scattered five hits and struck out three.

In addition to Cunningham's four-hit night, Joey Terdoslavich went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Gosselin went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Wilson Betemit led the Bulls with a 2-for-4 performance, the only multi-hit game on Durham's five-hit night.

The Gwinnett Braves conclude the two-game series against Durham on Saturday night at Coolray Field, first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Cody Martin (5-6, 3.27) is scheduled to start for the G-Braves, while the Bulls will counter with left-hander Enny Romero (3-9, 5.42). Tony Schiavone will have the play-by-play call beginning at 6:50 PM on WDUN.com, GwinnettBraves.com, Tune-In Radio and the MiLB First Pitch app. The game will also be televised on the MeTV network, WSB-TV Channel 2.2 with broadcasters Van Earl Wright and Dave Lezotte.

The first 2,000 fans in attendance on Saturday will receive a Julio Teheran Bobblehead. WWE wrestling legend Ric Flair(r), The Nature Boy(r) will also be on hand to throw out the first pitch.
